Daniel Kandlbauer – The Shades of Light

Daniel Kandlbauer is back--softer, more profound, more melancholy; intense, but with the same anger and force that is the hallmark of his music. His new album sounds more mature and more serene, down-to-earth but at the same time ethereal. Meanwhile, those who expect just dry, formulaic music will be disappointed. These are songs from the street and from the road; songs of journeys, both external and internal; songs of hotel rooms and sleepless nights; of sofas in recording studios where he slept. Songs that can only be written by someone who has travelled thousands of kilometres throughout Switzerland in the past two years, and in so doing hasn’t shied away from the journey into himself. Songs of a man who has woken up countless times not knowing where he was and has had to ask the hotel reception for his exact location.

These are the songs of a hard-working musician who has made over 200 appearances in the last one and a half years

and who sums up the experience with: "other people go into therapy." Perhaps it was the countless hours spent alone in the car, which produced the voice of this new Kandlbauer; all that time alone between appearances, with questions asked and the realisation that he doesn’t have the answers.

"The Shades of Light" is the name of his new album, which was released on January 4th. It’s not just black and white, but also countless shades of grey and colour.

"I don’t know what I work through in the songs. I just know that it’s always me. Sometimes I only realise what the songs actually mean years later".

This isn’t modesty talking, but caution. Here is someone who doesn’t want to save or destroy the world with his music. Rather, he leaves his songs to find their own space, their own identity. And he goes back to his own musical roots, not only where the selection of musicians and producers is concerned (Pele Loriano, Georg Schlunegger Egger), but also in his collaboration with Ken Hensley, mastermind of the legendary band Uriah Heep, with whom he re-recorded the cult song "Lady in Black”.

As of January 30th, Daniel Kandelbauer will be back on the road. He’ll play one show after another, work himself from venue to venue until he no longer knows where he is, and in so doing will find himself again.
