Kalon is an art rock ensemble, performing in Pittsburgh and abroad since 2003.
We originally gathered over conversations about music and art at a wonderful Indian restaurant named Thali. Though originally meant as a side project, it took on an energy of its own, and took over as a central focus.
We are all growing and working towards out own unique musical expression, and leaving little breadcrumbs along the way. What we are doing now, will most likely be very different from what is coming next, and so on, but we hope that what we leave behind will be worthwhile.
Our base instrumentation relies on guitars, cello, bass, viola, and drums, though we are also experimenting with harp, sitar, and tabla, zither, and field recordings for future compositions. We also have an occasional 'performance art' approach to live performances, including a wide variety of visual performances, and interaction, where possible.
Thank you for your interest, and do enjoy the music.
"Kinda like finding Jesusvery existential music. Feels sort of like falling off the monkeybars but landing on the slide!"
--Linda Moore
Kalon has played with the likes of bands such as Don Caballero, Kayo Dot, Zombi, Make Believe, Giant Squid, Grayceon, Lexsis Jumps, and many many more that we can't remember at this time.
We've played CMU Carnival (2006 and 2007), Three Rivers Prog Rock Festival, and for a variety of charities such as Amnesty International, Amy's Army, Liberty in North Korea, and even organized a benefit for "Music on the Edge," part of the University of Pittsburgh's School of Music.
We've also played at many art galleries, such as Modern Formations, Garfield Artworks, and the Bricolage Theater [part of the Pittsburgh Gallery Crawl].
As stated in previous status updates, WE ARE CURRENTLY NOT TAKING ANY SHOWS AS WE PREPARE TO WRITE NEW MUSIC, so please don't send a show request unless it's something absolutely beyond any belief in which someone would drop everything they were doing in order to take an opportunity for it. No offense, but we only play out a few times a year, and we spend all of our creative energies putting together promotions for the show as well as making each experience unique [such as visuals, interpretive dance, performance art], so it kind of has to be a big deal for us to take time away from our other projects [work, school, other bands, etc].
Thank you for stopping by.
