Many artists leave their home to find influences while others absorb what is around them to create their work. Kal Nwaneri was able to combine both. His African background combined with American influences has allowed him to create exceptional music that ushers in a wave of new artists creating their own distinct sound. Born in Nigeria, Kal is the first Igbo Alternative, soul, Rock artist in America. This group of distinct African people has been shaped by many other cultures from around the globe. Kal has taken the traditional African rhythms, Caribbean melodies and American hip hop to create a fresh and distinct sound that has been missing from popular music. Instead of watering down his influences, Kal sings in both English and Igbo to represent where he is from and where he is going.



The new album titled “Life Under Control” is filled with songs that define what Kal’s struggles have been and how they are universal. “This album shares the hard times along with the love and experience it takes to reach an achievement,” said Nwaneri. “The songs explain how to rise from the bottom to the top and become your own King or Queen ”



His love for music began at an early age in Africa but became his passion at the age of sixteen when his mother gave him his first piano. Kal threw himself into his music and taught himself to play and read sheet music. "My mother is my biggest motivation,” said Nwaneri. “She is the one who believed in me. She

is my inspiration." From the deep ghettos of the Nigerian city of Aba, Kal overcame extreme obstacles and hardships.



Kal began recording original compositions in 1999. Receiving his first publishing deal with Windswept Music in 2003, he has since recorded with artists such as Biz Markie, Elephant Man, Mya and Will Smith. Kal's talents reach beyond his unique vocals and thought provoking lyrics. A self taught pianist and flautist, he has produced tracks for the soundtrack for New Line Cinema’s film “The King's Ransom” and Interscope Records recording artist Mya.



Keeping his eyes toward success with determination and faith Kal is creating and living his dreams. "Always believe in yourself and go forward with your dreams. Never allow anyone to tell you, you can't do what you believe in. Not your family, friends and especially not the government."

A young man with an old soul, Kal is dedicated to touching lives and reaching kids in Nigeria, U.S. & the world with his music.
