The Kal Bergendahl Project (KBP) is a group of several diverse musicians from the Kenosha, WI. area. The group's founder and bassist, Kal Bergendahl, embarked on this project venturing to combine smooth, edgy jazz with soulful pop music in 2005. KBP steps into the worlds of R&B and pop, as well as instrumental jazz. The group's sounds are reminiscent of Jeff Lorber and Kirk Whalum on the jazz side and Alicia Keys and Marvin Gaye on the pop/R&B side.
With the unique and interesting blend of musical variety, KBP has created a musical setting that has attracted a wide audience and diverse fan base. This has given them the ability to perform at a wide range of musical venues. Kenosha News Get Out columnist Paddy Fineran wrote: "KBP features a multi-ethnic lineup of talented musicians and vocalists. The pop jazz and soulful funk songs are full of messages of love and peace and togetherness." (Jan. 2012)
During the past seven years KBP has recorded three CD's (Love Unconditional, Everlasting Life and Life & Soul) and performed throughout the southeast Wisconsin area and beyond. Some notable performances include; Bastille Days/Jazz in the Park (Milwaukee), Summer Sizzle (Milwaukee), Washington Park Jazz (Milwaukee), Chill on the Hill (Milwaukee), Jazz Crawl for the Arts (Plymouth), Concerts in the Park (Green Lake), Concert on the Lakefront (Lake Geneva), U.W. Parkside (Kenosha), Lakefront Festival of the Arts (Milwaukee), Jean's Jazz Series (Racine), Downtown Summer Concert Series (Winthrop Harbor,Il.), Jon McLaughlin at Carthage College (Kenosha). An Evening of Dinner & Jazz (Lake City, MI), Gateway Technical College 2012 MLK Celebration (Kenosha).
KBP gives Kal and the other members of the band the opportunity to take the next step in their playing and creativity. "I wanted to have a group which has the ability to have any member lead, whether instrumentally or vocally," he explains. "Whether playing a Stevie Wonder or Elvis cover, an instrumental cover like the 'Sanford & Son Theme' or one of our originals we aim to keep the audience smiling and moving their feet."
