J the S Bio
Refusing to confine himself to simple categorization as an artist, J The S
(short for Jake the Snake) brings the entire spectrum of his life experiences to
the table in his music. Born in Massachusetts, J The S split his time between
Montserrat and Nevis in the West Indies until age five. Upon returning to the
States, his formative years were spent staying for brief periods in different
cities in Massachusetts and Vermont. By the time he arrived in Boston as a
teenager, a volatile domestic situation and flawed role models had already
inspired a notebook full of rhymes and a dedication rarely seen in young
artists.
In Boston, Jake began his rap career by establishing a feared reputation on the
local battle circuit. Opportunities to open shows for artists such as Talib
Kweli, Kool G Rap, AZ, Fat Joe, Slaughterhouse, Brother Ali, and Wu-Tang Clan
quickly followed, earning the young rapper respect from hip-hop veterans. His
style--a combination of street-inspired narratives and philosophical content
delivered with urgency and passion--became J The S's trademark, as did the
illustrated gallery of tattoos that covered his body.
J's music reflects the thoughts of someone who's seen and experienced much
during his life. He was exposed to the criminal underworld from a young age,
first as a child in his household and later on his own as an adult. Though he
can speak with authority about that lifestyle, his music embodies more than just
a street mentality. His work as a teacher in Boston, in which he
facilitated
youth-oriented programs focusing on social issues and politics, reflects an
intelligence and depth that defies his young age.
That means he can do a song about Boston's youth violence epidemic ("Long Hot
Summer" with Letia LaRok) and a gritty street-oriented track with his group the
Greater Good both with equal credibility. He can craft a radio hit with platinum
artist Jadakiss ("The Last Party," his latest single which has scored 350+ BDS
spins on commercial radio thus far) and still perform alongside political
artists like dead prez, KRS-One and Immortal Technique.
Over the past three years, hip-hop fans searching for a fresh voice have
increasingly embraced Snza's music, pushing four singles to the 1 spot on the
national college radio charts and making him a constant presence on respected
web sites such as HipHopDX, AllHipHop, 2dopeboyz, JTTS.com, Nah Right,
Kevinnottingham.com and many more. His internationally distributed 2006 album
Strategy of the Crown was the first in a series of stellar releases, followed by
a steady string of original material: Year of the Snake, Vols. I and II, When In
Rome and My Will continued to showcase his development as an artist, as he held
his ground next to names like , B.o.B., Sean Price, Joell Ortiz, Devin the Dude
and many others.
As a precursor to the release of "The Last Days" album in early 2010, J The S
will release "Wish You Were Here," a new project of original material featuring
collaborations with Nipsey Hussle, Jadakiss, Crooked I and Saigon. That release
should prepare listeners for "The Last Days," an album that his range of
experiences and influences culminate in one explosive package. Incorporating
Jake's skills as both a lyricist and a musician, "Last Days" seeks to bridge the
gap between raw rhyme skills and sharp writing, intelligence and wit and even
between musical styles, from hip-hop to reggae to soul and more. In typical
fashion, its progressive hip-hop that defies easy categorization; J The S
wouldn't have it any other way.
