music biography

2010

joshua black wilkins is an alt. country, Americana, roots rock, singer-songwriter, artist of noir.

His songs have spent many years transcending genres and pigeon holes. He started writing songs and teaching himself guitar at 15, and started playing coffee shops regularly by 17. Bars by 19. Festivals by 21. He had recorded 3 CD’s by the time he moved to Nashville in the fall of 2002 and landed on Lower Broadway at The Bluegrass Inn within a week of stepping onto hallowed ground.

Although joshua moved to nashville with a built-in rock-a-billy band, and a following, he spent 2 1/2 years proving to himself, and the east nashville population, that he wanted to make serious records. He quickly started playing mainstream clubs, and toured solo to demonstrate the variety of Nashville’s unheard-of musical qualities.

He was signed to Angryson Records in 2004 and released Hellbent and Brokenhearted on that label. Although Angryson Records was not equipped with big budget publicists, joshua was able to make a new name for himself as an artist of “bastard” proportions. The title “Nashville’s Alt Country Bastard” was quickly used to support the fact that joshua’s style of songwriting and performance was not a one-sided, single genre entity. There was not, and will not be, a single lineage of music that can be directly related to what joshua black wilkins does with his music.

2010 brought the long awaited release of While You Wait. Along with his band, The Forty Volts, joshua created the perfect combination of his influences. Produced by Mark Robertson (Th’ Legendary ShackShakers, Mattew Ryan), joshua took 22 new songs, and a few of his earliest compositions, and compiled a record that has brought the ears of new listeners on their edge.

Although he is seated in the roots/americana world of what is NOT pop country music, joshua black wilkins is just as inspired by 90's grunge music as well as the haunting sounds of Tom Waits, the iconic swell of Bruce Springsteen and the fever of rebellion in Johnny Cash.
