The Music Monitor: Obscure Bands. Est. 1997 -- JF&TSB have 3 full-length releases and a rare 7" single to date. The band has worked with both AMP (Hamilton, Canada) and Out of Tune Records (Seattle.
Geography has been the bands major influence - the older stuff has an obvious 80's influence. After all, Baltimore was a hot-bed for cock rock at one point. Flame's philosophy was to combine 50's rock n' roll with a slight homage to Maryland heavy metal trailblazers Kix.
Flame picked up many musical styles along the way. He began as a gospel drummer, ended up playing in Hardcore bands in his teens, then would move West with a drive to "just play music".
His first stop was Moscow, Idaho where he'd quickly gain a reputation as a front-man in this sleepy college town. Throwing pitchers of beer all over an audience and starting food-fights immediately became more important than performing his 50's influenced punk rock with any musical talent. One innocent bystander once proclaimed "I give this guy a 10 for performance, and a 0 for musicianship".
Flame would run out of places to perform in the area and would end up taking his show up to Spokane where he would meet local promoter Terry Grobal. This would be the first time anyone would put the bug in his ear to go to Seattle. Grobal would book JF with bands such as The Makers, Zeke, The Hookers, and White Zombies Sean Ysult. "The difference between Spokane and Moscow was I never got kicked out of any performances in Spokane for trashing a joint"
Seattle, WA - His arrival in Seattle was met with zero fanfare. The crowd that JF&TSB would eventually appease to was used to fast hardcore and "pop-corn beats". "I was pissed off too. I wanted to go out and take a big shit on the world, and I think that was the common bond that I had with the early Seattle punk scene" - It would take some time for his style to catch on to people. "We weren't fast, we weren't slow and grungy, but we were loud as hell and rock n' roll as fuck"
It took very little time for JF&TSB to attract an audience. "This guy comes out looking like a dirty reject Elvis, spewing beer everywhere, feedback like crazy, probably pissing himself, and his songs are actually pretty damn good! All for under 5 bucks. I was sold"
The bands last performance happened on July 4th, 2009 at the world famous Comet. They literally went out with a bang as audience members pelted them with M-80's and all sorts of other fireworks. Amps were blown up, guitars smashed, beer flung everywhere, and JF lying on stage with nothing left on except his underwear. Audience members would often rip his clothing off - this show was no exception.
After a much needed break, the band has been talking about performing again. "I've still got music to write, and if I have to continue performing the way we have to in order to get the music out their, then so be it"
2011 marks the bands 14th year in existence. Whether JF's music remains relevant to anyone is up for debate. The only truth is, if you've heard of the band, been to a performance, or listened to a track, you simply don't forget who Jimmy Flame and the SexXy Boys are.
