The first three songs, Stagger Lee, So Many Things, and Moonlight Mile, are the product of the duo, Jesse and Demy. After a year of gigging around town in various restaurants and pubs we began to notice how the music became more effortless and organic with each gig. Eventually we began to wonder if we could translate what we do live to a real studio recording environment.
On a "starving artists" budget, we decided on a two day "soup to nuts" recording session in which a small handful of songs would be mixed and mastered by the end of the second day. Demetrius Keller (Demy) assumed the role of producer, and also contributed all the percussion work.
The session took place at Billy Oskay's Big Red Studio (www.bigredstudio.com) during August of 2010 with Billy himself engineering. These are all first takes with no overdubs The song So Many Things makes use of the loop station, where I record my guitar live in the moment with a foot pedal and then play a second or even third guitar part over it, effectively sounding like more than one guitar. The loop staion has become an integral part of Jesse and Demy's live sound
The last two songs, New Dog and Who's Falling,
are rough demos recorded in my very modest garage
studio. Greg Hyatt (www.greghyatt.com), the bassist/vocalist and co-visionary of my other band, Brethren Thread (www.brethrenthread.com), graciously plays the bass on both of these tracks.
