In his own unobtrusive way, young Toronto songsmith Jerry Leger is making a real impact in both Canada and the U.S As a fully independent artist, he has been flying under the music industry radar, but the eloquence of his roots-based songs have been earning Leger both the respect of his peers and a growing fan base.
His first foray Stateside was in October 2008, with well-received gigs in the Carolinas, and Tennessee. A second eastern U.S. tour in early 2010 saw Leger open for The Sadies in Rochester, be part of popular concert series such as Knoxville's Blue Plate Special , Nashville's Music City Roots (hosted by Jim Lauderdale) and in-session with the legendary WSM Radio (also in Nashville and home of the Grand Ole Opry).
On the Canadian scene, Leger's talent has long been lauded by some of this country's premier singer/songwriters. "Jerry Leger is one of the best songwriters I've heard in quite some time" declared Ron Sexsmith, who has asked Leger to open a number of his shows, while appearing as a special guest at some of Jerry's gigs. Don Kerr (Rheostatics, Sexsmith) was sufficiently impressed that he produced Jerry's second album, 2006's Farewell Ghost Town, while Josh Finlayson of the Skydiggers co-produced You, Me and the Horse (with Tim Bovaconti). Finlayson notes that "Jerry Leger carries on a tradition of songwriters who document the world as they observe and pass through it. He is tenacious, ambitious and scrappy. All noble qualities that reveal themselves in his songs."
Leger has appeared on numerous notable Canadian programs such as CBC's Q (Jian Ghomeshi calls him "a strong songwriter with a compelling voice") and Mainstreet, CFRB's Rock Talk and has opened for such artists as Fred Eaglesmith, Jill Barber, Danny Michel and Justin Townes Earle.
His new record, "Traveling Grey" will be released for the 2010 holiday market and is again recorded with Tim Bovaconti and long-time backing group, The Situation. The record will premiere November 29th at Toronto's Hugh's Room, where Leger has previously performed with Skydiggers, folk legend Jesse Winchester and played a 2-night stand with Ron Sexsmith.
