Click here to get your free text scroller. MC Janik abandoned the typical Caribbean clichés a long time ago. Right from the first album, MC Beaucoup (which he recorded in Kingston, Jamaica, with digital reggae producer King Jammys), he has been following his own musical instinct, free of constraints.
Although Janik is Caribbean to the core, he steers well clear of zouk love and quick time rhythms. MC is a non-metropolitan cosmopolitan, a first-class toaster. For a long time now, rap fans have understood why Janik of Martinique feels just as much at home with hip hop as with ragga: French audiences heard Janik MCs sugary voice for the first time in 1992, on the Rapattitude 2 compilation, with an original, refreshing number named 'Natty Princess'. 'L'Homme Qui Tient Le Mic'' (The man with the mike), of the same ilk, was released the following year on the historical compilation album, Les Cool Sessions.
"I really learned about rap when I worked with Secteur Ä, admits Janik. "It was a confirmation." Thanks to Secteur Ä, Janik was able to express himself on a number of occasions (Liaisons Dangereuses, the group Noyau Dur, guests in the Combines project which was initiated by Janik himself, etc.), while pursuing his solo career. After the MC Beaucoup album, which mainly appealed to connoisseurs, MC Janik was released in 1998. This
was a chance for Janik to address a wider audience. "I never differentiate between the West Indian audience and the others", he explains. "Getting people dancing is all that really matters!"
With songs like 'Gentleman' and 'Madinina' (which were produced by Tyrone Downie, a former Wailer who played keyboards for Bob Marley), this record released by Hostile was a revelation of the scope of Janiks potential. The songs from the album were performed on stage (MC Janik was the warm-up act for Jamaican singer Michael Rose) and played on sound systems for over a year. "I found myself on a long tour of Europe and the Caribbean. In fact, the only time I stopped was when I went into the studio to record this new album."
The process was pretty straightforward: Janik started out by writing the lyrics for T'Inquiète. (Dont fret) based on instrumentals he had laid down on his MPC. Next, his brother Thierry came over from the Caribbean to help him out and compose a few other instrumentals. The next step was Montpellier, to team up with Tyrone Downie in his new hometown. Downie accepted Janiks proposition to work on the new album. "After Tyrone had put the sounds down, we went back up to Paris to record a few extra takes with the musicians from the English band Robotiks", adds Janik. The final mix was carried out by Jamaïcain Fatman, in Paris Twin studio. Mickey Mossman, a former member of Démocrates D and an underground legend, came up with the sound for the first single, 'Maintenant' (Now). The songs are rich and varied. They feature a number of artists such as Guy-Al MC, Jah Mike, Tywony, Stryka D, and even Blackjack, who performs on a remix of 'Maintenant'. Janiks themes are both diverse and familiar. "I dont write about whats happening on Venus or Mars", he points out humorously. "All I ever talk about is DJs! People have to feel involved when they hear the songs on sound systems; theyre reality lyrics most of the time."
The ambiance of 'Maintenant', which starts off like a ragga hip hop, with scratches and a rap tempo beat, is Janiks creation. "I dont stick to any one style", points out the artist. "My music can be regular, easy-listening reggae, like Shaggys material."
All you have to do is dive into Janik MCs "West Indies Reggae Rap bath" to realize that T'inquiète. started out as a personal consecration before becoming a commercial one.
Janik is such a prolific recording artist that he had to pick a dozen or so songs out a total of over twenty he had recorded in the studio! "I even had a few extra studio days left, so I started working on the second and third volumes of Combines (his ragga concept, featuring joint performances from a number of MCs and toasters, (editorial note))!"
In a word, T'Inquiète. is in the image of its creator: an eclectic record brimming with love for music and communicative joie de vivre. Make no mistake: Janik does not think in terms of career; he simply has the ambition to make good music that will be respected by the public.
"Ive no idea what tomorrow will bring", concludes the MC from Martinique, "but Im part of the crew. And the Best One ends up being the skipper. Thats the way I see it."
