I am a 52 year old pianist and composer from Bodoe in Northern Norway. My background includes classical piano, progressive rock and jazz. My career as a jazz musician started in 1976 with piano trio and continued as a backing musician for drummer Jon Christensen and other jazz artists at local clubs. I became a professional musician in 1979 and toured with Arild Andersen and Nils Petter Molvær in 1982.
Since 1993 I have worked with my own band, the Jan Gunnar Hoff Group. Major band events: Vossajazz, 1995. Molde International Jazzfestival and Oris London Jazzfestival 1996. Stavanger and Bergen festivals 1998. Concerts in Paris november 2000. Collaboration with Pat Metheny, Molde 2001.
Cooperation with Mike Stern 2006-2008.
From 2008 I have also worked with Alex Acuna and Per Mathisen in a new trio, touring and recording. February 2010 we did a DVD-shoot at DW-drums, Oxnard California, due for release at NAMM 2011.
I work part time as a professor at the University of Tromsø and at UIA in Kristiansand.
As a composer I have made works for chamber orchestra, sinfonietta, choir and other settings, in addition to compositions for my solo recordings "Syklus" (1993), "Moving" (1995), "Crosslands" (1998), "In town" (2003) and "Magma" (2008). I did the commission for Vossajazz 2005 "Free flow songs" and received an Edvard Grieg -prize for my jazzmazz "Meditatus" in 2006. "Meditatus" has been performed in Norway, Iceland, Canada. November 2010 we will perform it in Riga, Latvia.
From 2008-2010 I have performed and toured in Russia, Belarus, Ukraine, Croatia, Iceland, Austria, Italy, Sweden, USA, Slovakia, England and Norway, including concerts in major cities such as New York, London, Stockholm, Zagreb, Los Angeles and Moscow.
