New York based tenor saxophonist Jake Saslow is emerging as a fresh new voice in New York's fertile modern jazz scene. As both an improviser and composer, Jake displays a strong knowledge of the jazz idiom's history while also being firmly planted in present-day society and culture.

"The tenor-saxophonist Jake Saslow practices a harmonious strain of modernism, warm and well considered." (The New York Times)

Jake Saslow graduated from The Manhattan School of Music in 2004 with B.M. in jazz studies. During this time he studied with, among others, Dick Oatts, George Garzone, David Liebman, and John Riley.

In the spring of 2007 Jake was selected by the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz Studies to be a member of its class of 2009. Based in New Orleans, the Monk Institute is under the artistic direction of Terence Blanchard and offers one of the premier jazz educations in the world. As one of only seven members of this full-tuition program, Jake had the opportunity to study and perform with jazz masters including Wayne Shorter, Herbie Hancock, Ron Carter, Buster Williams, Benny Golson, Danilo Perez, Kenny Barron, John Scofield, Steve Coleman, Kurt Rosenwinkel, and Brian Blade. Through this program Jake performed extensively throughout the New Orleans area at venues including Snug Harbor and Preservation Hall, as well as completing international tours of Panama and India. During this time Jake also studied classical composition with the renowned composer Roger Dickerson. As an arranger, Jake re-orchestrated 4 compositions from Terence Blanchard's album "Jazz In Film" for big band, which Mr. Blanchard performed with the Juilliard Jazz Orchestra in February 2009. In May of 2009 Jake graduated from The Monk Institute with a masters degree in jazz studies.

Since returning to New York in June 2009 Jake has been performing throughout New York's many jazz clubs and collaborating with some of the world's finest musicians. As a bandleader, Jake has brought his own projects to venues including The Jazz Gallery, Fat Cat, Bar Next Door, and The Kitano. As sideman, Jake has worked with, among others, Joe Sanders' Infinity, Logan Richardson, and the legendary drummer Barry Altschul. Currently, Jake can also be heard touring the world with the Grammy award-winning singer Michael Bublé.

As an educator Jake teaches private lessons on saxophone, flute, and clarinet, and has experience teaching a broad range of skill levels, from absolute beginners to advanced college students. Through the Thelonious Monk Institute Jake instructed a jazz combo at NOCCA (New Orleans' performing arts high school), and gave music workshops throughout all grade-levels in the New Orleans public school system, varying in level from basic introductions to music to advanced big band ensemble playing. As a clinician Jake has taught masterclasses on various subjects including saxophone technique, rhythmic concepts for improvisation, and harmonic concepts for improvisation at Loyola University in New Orleans as well as the 2008 Panama Jazz Festival. Jake has also had a transcription and analysis published in the "woodshed" section of Downbeat magazine.

Jake Saslow is endorsed by Selmer saxophones and plays them exclusively.
