ROADWHORE (review)

Virginia Beach may not rank up there with Detroit or Stockholm in terms of neckbreaking, booze-addled rock 'n roll, but a few more bands like IRONHEAD could quickly change that perception. Fittingly, this trio has upgraded the swampy sleaze metal of their charming DIY debut into an eardrum-stomping exercise in ghastly distoro-harshness. The combination of punishing heaviness and Johnny Yeagher's creative guitar chops truly separate this album from the boatloads of mediocre sleaze punk that pours in for review around here. The filthy, spluttering riff of "Roadwhore" simultaneously exhilirates and disorients. Bassist Angela Foxx adds wrathful snarl to the stunning chorus of "Sleep" and the hellish crunch of "Dead and Gone". Yeagher's vocal bark exudes an irresistible fiendish quality, like a zombified version of Mark Hoffman from BIBLE OF THE DEVIL. Just about every track shows marked improvement, and IH is bangin' at the door of mid-period ENTOMBED in terms of sheer brutality, so buy or die. While many bands suffocate their trademark sound with downtuning or harsher vocals, IRONHEAD bring the heavy in spades. Hail to the power trios! -Peacedogman.com
