Die virtuelle Bühne - Soulbluesjazzsternchen Joss Loner und YouTube

Oktober // Es wird allmählich eng für die klassischen „Bretter, die die Welt bedeuten“ - immer wichtiger für Newcomer-Musiker werden die großen Broadcast-Yourself-Portale Youtube oder MySpace. Ein perfektes Beispiel für es-kann-also-doch-klappen ist die Sängerin und Songwriterin Joss Loner aus Hamburg.
Ein Mikrofon, ein Klavier, eine Webcam und eine unverwechselbare, ausdrucksstarke Soulstimme - das sind die Zutaten für den Welterfolg der Wahl-Hamburgerin, die mit ihrem Internetauftritt im Onlineportal YouTube inzwischen weit mehr als eine Million Zuschauer erreicht hat. Regelmäßig wird sie von ihren Fans in die Top-Listen gewählt, auf der türkischen Plattform „VidiVodo“ hat sie mit ihren Coversongs jetzt fast die Millionenmarke überschritten, ihr Musikvideo „Ain‘t no Sunshine“ fand in einer einzigen Nacht mehr als 200.000 Zuschauer. Doch welcher Mensch steckt hinter diesen Erfolgen?
„Im Sommer 2007 war die Idee noch recht simpel: Trau‘ dich vor Menschen zu singen. Mit der Zeit habe ich angefangen, die ersten Webcam-Videos online zu stellen; eigentlich nur, um mein Lampenfieber und die Angst, vor Menschen zu singen, zu überwinden. Das, was danach kam - das war alles nicht geplant.“ Kurz darauf wird sie von YouTube gefeatured, d.h. auf der Startseite des Online-Portals beworben. Die Einladung von Google, auf dem „Zeitgeist“-Festival in London aufzutreten, flattert bald darauf ins Haus der vollkommen von ihrem Erfolg überraschten Joss Loner. Und die Referenzenliste wird immer länger: Heute ist sie offizieller Partner von YouTube, hat als Special Guest bei der Gedenkfeier für Michael Jackson in Hamburg gesungen, ist gemeinsam mit Jane Comerford, bekannt aus der „Popstars“-Jury und als Frontsängerin von „Texas Lightning“, der Popsängerin Jenniffer Kae und der deutschen Liedermacherin Regy Clasen bei der Benefizveranstaltung zugunsten von New Light zu hören; im Sommer 2009 gewinnt sie den Musikvideo-Wettbewerb der Bandplattform demotape.de und stellt damit ihre Qualitäten als Songwriterin unter Beweis.
Eine musikalische Zusammenarbeit verbindet sie mit Bo Heart, dem Pianisten, der für 4yoursoul mit Xavier Naidoo auftrat, und mit weiteren nationalen und internationalen Songwritern. „Nun ist es Zeit, endgültig aus dem viereckigen Videokasten auszubrechen“, resümiert die sympathische Soultröte mitte Zwanzig auf die Frage, wie es denn nun weitergehen soll: „Momentan habe ich angefangen, an meinem ersten Songalbum zu arbeiten.“ Doch an diesem Donnerstag ist sie erst einmal mit Musikerkollegen im Stageclub in Hamburg zu hören - ganz ohne die Bühnenbretter geht es dann wohl doch nicht.

Joss Loner, Josephine Loner, Josi, Josy, Josn. you can call me like you want. But yes, Joss Loner it's my stage name.
You have a voice that is very sensuous and hypnotic with a soft lilting quality that is perfect for ballads. Would you say that is true?.
A sensuous and hypnotic voice - that sounds nice . Thank you very much! If your question is "do I like singing ballads?," The answer is. yes. But not only ballads, I want to sing a mixture of ballads and upbeat songs in the styles of jazz, swing, blues, soul and funk.At the moment Im working on some own material with several musicans, and I try to be creative with ballads and some uptempo stuff. Mostly in the "jazz, pop, soul" genres.
You have a style where at certain points in a song you sing slightly ahead of the tempo, as in Gershwin's Summertime. I've heard that done before, but not in the unique way that you do it. Does that come naturally. or was that a style that you developed over time?
That's difficult to answer. I think it's a combination of development. and something that comes naturally. Im not sure how to explain exactly, but Iwill try.
Initially, it started with me uploading videos to YouTube. Which I did just for myself, at first. because I lacked confidence in my music, and I wasnt sure what kind of music I wanted to do. So I started to singing in my room while sitting in front of my webcam. I wasn't sure if this was such a good method, but I repeated it again and again, and after receiving some positive feedback. I gained self-condidence. After a few videos I began to figure out my own style, and with each new video my fear has become less.
At the beginning, I just sang cover songs from all styles of music. I would say that the covers where horrible, but they were an important part of my self-development. As a result, my confidence has grown immensely Today, if I am singing a song for YouTube I do not over-think what I am doing. I just hit the record button let the music in my mind and soul flow out of me. But this is only possible because I went that important step before - of finding myself in the music. Hopefully, you will understand what I mean.
Because of the quality of your voice, and your jazz leanings, it would be easy to make comparisons to the vocalist Sade Do you thinks that is a valid comparison?
Oh, its a nice compliment because Sade is awesome! I get a lot of requests to sing Sade songs, but I am not sure if I should do it because I do not want to imitate someone with my music. Sade is wonderful and her voice is full of emotion, but she IS Sade. and I am Joss, you know.
