HILARY HAHN was born in Lexington, Virginia, and moved to Baltimore in 1983, where she had her first violin lessons. In 1985, she began five years of study with Klara Berkovich, who had taught at the Leningrad School for the Musically Gifted for 25 years before emigrating to Baltimore. In 1990, Hilary Hahn entered the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia to study with Jascha Brodsky, the last surviving student of Eugène Ysaÿe. Since her debut with the Bal-timore Symphony in 1991, she has appeared regularly with the world’s leading orchestras and on notable recital series throughout Europe, Asia, North America, South America and

Australia.

Hilary Hahn has recorded for Deutsche Grammophon since 2002. Her first recording for the Yellow Label, four concertos by J. S. Bach, was released to wide critical acclaim in 2003. In 2008 she was named Classic FM Gramophone “Artist of the Year”; her fifth recording for Deutsche Grammophon, the Schoenberg and Sibelius violin concertos, with the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra conducted by Esa-Pekka Salonen, won a Choc du Monde de la musique in 2008 and a Grammy® for “Best Instrumental Soloist Performance (with Orchestra)” in 2009.

Press Quotes:

"Hahn and Salonen have so unified an approach to the Schoenberg that it seems imprinted on their DNA. They seem determined to render the most suave, seductive, aurally enticing rendition of the concerto ever recorded.”

-American Record Guide (July/August)

San Francisco Chronicle Reviews Hilary Hahn's Schoenberg-Sibelius Recording:

“Hahn's playing is as ardent as ever, and the Swedish Radio Symphony plays beautifully under Salonen”

David Hurwitz of Classicstoday.com has recently reviewed Hilary Hahn's new recording of the Schoenberg and Sibelius violin concertos: “I don't want to give the misleading impression that on hearing the Schoenberg those resistant to the idiom will suddenly have some sort of 12-tone epiphany…but if it's going to happen at all, this astonishing interpretation offers your best bet. Coupled to a truly characterful and personal view of the Sibelius, this disc ratifies Hahn's standing among the most outstanding violinists active today…10/10”.

Terry Teachout, drama critic for the Wall Street Journal and music critic for Commentary, has recently reviewed Hilary Hahn, Schoenberg/Sibelius Violin Concertos (DGG) on his blog:

"America's best young classical violinist has taken on a real nutcracker this time around: Arnold Schoenberg's 1936 concerto, a finger-twistingly hard piece of twelve-tone neoromanticism that sounds like Brahms gone bonkers. Even if you don't buy Schoenberg's music--which I don't--you'll find this specimen perversely fascinating, and Hahn has taken out a gilt-edged accident insurance policy by coupling it with Sibelius' ever-popular D Minor Concerto. Needless to say, the violin playing is fabulous, and Esa-Pekka Salonen and the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra provide immaculate support (TT)."

Alex Ross, music critic for The New Yorker has said: "For perhaps the first time, Arnold Schoenberg has hit 1 on the Billboard chart (classical), thanks to Hilary Hahn's splendidly expressive account of the Violin Concerto"
