- POST CHAMP -

It’s been a while now since Perth’s Heavy Weight Champ broke up, after playing a massive part in the West Australian rock scene over the last ten years the lads bowed out at the top of their game, destroying their beloved Amplifier bar one last time in front of a packed house.

The band had played over 200 live shows, travelled tens of thousands of kilometres touring country on numerous occasions, released two EPs and one album, received five WAMI nominations and spent over a year in the National Independent Records charts top twenty.

Now, post Champ, Singer/Guitarist, Grant McCulloch, Bass player, Luke Copeland and Drummer, Dean Miller are all enjoying new adventures.

Grant McCulloch moved straight from Heavy Weight Champ into building a new musical machine. He would join forces with ex-Antistatic drummer Brody Simpson and go on to form The Siren Tower, a four piece rock outfit. McCulloch plays acoustic in The Siren Tower and expands on the more mature material from Heavy Weight Champ’s last release, “Lo-Fi Funeral”. He has also recorded two drum and bass tracks with award winning Australian beats producer Shock One, both of which have landed world wide releases through UK labels. McCulloch also continues to write for Perth street press X-Press and several other music publications.

Luke Copeland has built and amazing life outside Heavy Weight Champ with his wife Jane. Baby Flynn came into the world on July 4th, 2007 and is growing quickly; mum and dad invested in micro drum kit early on and have set the boy on his way to rock stardom. Outside home Luke has become a business owner, buying 1st Dental, the lab he had worked at during Heavy Weight Champ. He and his business partner have done the hard yards building the business into one of the most respected in W.A. When he finds a hole in the calendar, Luke can be found on the golf course.

Dean Miller had fought the travel bug for years and after Heavy Weight Champs retirement show, he packed his bags and headed overseas on a truly nomadic journey. Following his love of food, Miller, a talented chef in his own right headed off to see the world. His travels would take him to Thailand, Morocco, Spain, France, Amsterdam, Germany and Italy before eventually returning home to his native Victoria. Miller now lives in Melbourne where he is continuing his career in the kitchen. Musically Miller has shifted from the kit to his acoustic guitar, writing and recording his own material at home.

The boys still get together when ever possible… they are all hugely appreciative of their time in the band and all the people that were a part of it, from producers to fans to fellow bands to parents and partners.

So friends… until the reunion, you can find Heavy Weight Champ's music on iTunes and the band will continue to rotate tracks for streming on this myspace page.
