In 1988, Eli Janney (Edsel, Rain) and Fugazi drummer Brendan Canty started the Washington DC-based side project GIRLS AGAINST BOYS. They called the project Girls Against Boys in answer to the "boys club" mentality of the punk scene at the time. The two called in their friend Scott McCloud (who was then a memeber of DC post hardcore band Soul Side) to sing and then recorded three songs.

Two years later Canty left the project but Scott and Eli began again, this time enlisting bassist Johnny Temple and drummer Alexis Fleisig (the rhythm section of Soul Side). With this line-up they finished three songs. Two years of work resulted in the release of a six-song vinyl ep called "90's vs. 80's".

In 1991 the four came together again, this time to turn the GVSB project into a band. They began recording their first full-length album, "Tropic of Scorpio", in December of 1991. Jeff Nelson, co-owner of Dischord records, released the album on his Adult Swim label in the spring of 1992. Girls Against Boys went on their first tour as a band that summer, playing dates all over the USA and Europe. During the US tour, GVSB played in Chicago and some people from Touch And Go records happened to be at the show. This led to a meeting with Corey Rusk, the owner of the label, who invited them to join Touch And Go in the fall of 1992.

In the winter of 1993 the band began recording their 2nd album, "Venus Luxure No. 1 Baby", with the help of producer Ted Niceley. The album was released in August 1993.

The albums that followed, 1995's "Cruise Yourself" and 1996's "House of GVSB", charted the growing fortunes of the band. In 1998 GVSB jumped to major label Geffen and released the album "Freak*on*ica" which however, was unsuccesful. 2002 saw the band's reunion and a new album (their sixth) called "You Can't Fight What You Can't See". It was their first for Jade Tree after breaking away from Geffen. Since 1992 they've played several shows (Reading, Lollapalooza, Lowlands, Pukkelpop, Mt. Fuji, Popkomm, SXSW) and have toured 4 continents.
