DESCRIPTION:
I made this video to show the effects of using different sized styli, to play a 78RPM record. Some people aren't aware that the grooves on 78s are much wider than LPs, and assume that the "swish" noise is the record itself, when in fact it is because they are just using the wrong size stylus! This video has two parts. In part one, I played the 78 with an modern LP stylus, and then again with a "genuine" 3mil stylus which is specifically designed to play these wide groove records.
In part two of this video, I played this record using a 3.5mil stylus and then a 4mil stylus. This is a "trick" that is commonly used to reduce some of the noise and distortion caused by wear. Listen for yourself and see which stylus you prefer for this particular 78. I like the 3.5mil, because it seems to be picking up more of the higher frequencies and less of the distortion.
Note:
I have not used any noise reduction in these, whatsoever! The effects you hear, are purely the result of using the different sized styli.
