Hello, you have made the wise choice of viewing the profile of the noise group Geisha, who live between Bristol and Berlin. We began like many groups out of boredom and sheer hatred of what was around us, not to save music, but to destroy it through an ever increasing number of FX units. The excitement of the 21st Century faded so fast, 2001 came and we were so far away from living in space the world was united for a brief time in disappointment before two planes were flown into two tall buildings. It was around this time Anton Maiof and Steve James were locked in a practice room all summer creating the beast that was to become Geisha. Could it have been something in the collective unconscious, picked up through alcohol burnt receptors? Anton might ascribe to this theory, Steve would certainly not.

Through the skree of fuzzed out guitars and voices and a shared love of Italian horror soundtracks, Geisha managed to take a view of this increasingly terrifying planet and turn it into the beautiful psychedelic noise which they have become renowned for.

After releasing the Hymns For The Living Dead EP (widely regarded as the noisiest noise rock record ever made) in 2004 through Blood Red Sounds, Geisha found their home with UK label Super-Fi Records (alongside such bands as Taint and Snowblood) and US label Crucial Blast (sharing the roster with the likes of Monarch! and Genghis Tron) and released debut album Mondo Dell’Orrore to worldwide critical acclaim in 2006.

UPDATE 2010

The Geisha Noise Research Group, to a certain extent has been a cursed musical project. We never planned this, you can’t. 2009 for us was a strange year and a series of life changing events forced us to re-evaluate what we would have to do in order to keep the project going. The changes were Anton Maiof’s move to Berlin and Robbie Cooper’s appointment as a psychology lecturer in Edinburgh. If the majority of us had remained in Bristol we would have kept going in our usual fashion, because of the difficulty in being able to write, a choice was made over the direction of the band. It was our conclusion that electronically we could do more work over the next (hopefully many) years than we could if we would continue doing sporadic practices between now, three countries. It saddens us greatly that Dr Robbie Cooper will not be joining us on the continuation of our journey, we extend the hand of friendship and wish him all the luck in the world with his other excellent projects.

There are other reasons at work here, however. We feel that over the years our musical niche has been slowly stolen from us, expression has been watered down, emotions are worth nothing. Fantasy and fear become either comic pissings of irony or not nearly funny enough. Whilst in Berlin, Anton began attending a few nights of Speedcore and Extratone and began to feel the future of noise rock lay there. On a routine trip back to the UK, he shared his ideas with Steve and Ganiel and they saw a reason to be excited also.

Geisha Noise Research Group has been honored to play over the years on many a night of Breakcore and Gabba, this is not new territory for us, merely an extension of some punk ideas we like, the observation of the death of “three chords and the truth” mixed with our original concept for the band: Absolute immersion, information overload and total brutality.

Some of you might be upset about this turn of events. if you need someone to blame, blame Company Fuck.

"Both rock music and noise have seen much abuse at the hands of pretenders to their respective thrones. This is why Geisha so deserves recognition and awe: they intuitively grasp the basic properties of each aesthetic and wield them with simultaneous mastery, like a doctor simultaneously performing open-heart surgery and cloning a Komodo Dragon, but doing it so fast that it all blends into one big, scaly, blood-soaked revelation. Geisha are a rare bird; ignore them at your peril."
