Gabriela Anders was born to music amidst the grace, paradox and tradition of Argentina. Her father is a noted jazz saxophonist, her grandfather was a classical violinist, and her grandmother a piano teacher. Gabriela studied classical guitar and piano at a Conservatory in Buenos Aires. "Growing up, there was a lot of Brazilian music, and I was fascinated with it because it's so harmonically rich and melodically interesting." Adding to the musical medley was her father's jazz influence which became even stronger than her classical studies.



After finishing high school, Gabriela decided that rather than continuing her classical studies in Buenos Aires she would move to New York. There she studied orchestration for brass and strings in a class conducted by Don Sebesky and later on, Composition at Hunter College. Gabriela began to write her own material. After a while her studio and club work took off and, in 1999, she secured a record deal with major label: Warner Brother's Jazz.



Gabriela Anders' debut album (1999) “ Wanting” is brimming with vocal subtlety; although smooth, it is anything but simple. It features arrangements and production by Paul Brown, George Duke, Allain Mallet and Anders herself. Gabriela wrote or co-wrote ten of the albums twelve tracks. The album elicited much praise for Anders’ vision and impassioned vocal style. Her unique marriage of Brazilian, Latin, and jazz led to Vogue and People describing Anders and her music as “exotic and bold” and “wonderfully soulful”.



Anders continued on her distinctive journey with "Last tango in Rio" (2004). Her second CD is a collection of classic songs closely associated with the great Billie Holiday that have been uniquely transformed by Anders’ interpretation and orchestration. "It had been a dream of mine to take old songs sung by my idol and spin them in my own way. Her work has meant so much to me,” says Anders. Recorded in New York and her native Buenos Aires , Anders took the nostalgic sounds of the bandoneon— an instrument typical of her homeland — along with the classic guitar sounds of Brazil - to present these songs with a personal and unexpected vision, blending both North and South American sensibilities. Hailed by critics (Los AngelesTimes, Billboard magazine, People magazine) as a highly-original and creative presentation of standards, "Last tango in Rio" represents a fresh and effervescent take on a classic songbook that has previously defied reinvention. "Last tango in Rio" was chosen as one of the Top 15 Jazz releases for 2005 by BET.



2009 - Gabriela's New Music ~



Gabriela 's new CD, "Bossa Beleza" (JVC/Japan), was released in November 2008. "Bossa Beleza" blends Gabriela's immediately recognizable sound with that of her first musical love, classic Bossa Nova. Eleven soulful and intimate tracks, including the Brazilian standards "Dindi", "Folhas Secas", "One Note Samba" and "Agua de Beber". Gabriela is happy to have finally documented her own vision of a style that was so much a part of her own musical development, and that she continues to feel such an affinity for.
