His given name means ‘man of literature’, but Fumi-hito instead uses
sounds as his symbols and tells stories with music. Raised in Hiroshima,
a city razed and rebuilt, he found solace in sound and learned a path of
ephemeral musicality from traditional Japanese folk-music, a favorite of
his parents. This early influence greatly affected his unique manner of
expression.
This Goes… is a genre-bending solo album from this accomplished live
musician who calls his music, “experimental, abstract and visual”.
Regarding the album, Fumi-hito says, “I was thinking about water a
lot…probably the purity and the movement. I’m not talking about
stagnant water. I think that’s the thing I’m trying to keep myself, is to not
get bored.”
This Goes… is a narrative told through music and samples from daily
life. Fumi says, “[he] can’t write lyrics, simple as that, but I feel a visual
narrative through notes, like martial arts expresses form.”
He cites such diverse influences as Lalo Schifrin, Yellow Magic
Orchestra, Bruce Lee, DJ Logic, John Coltrane, Ryo Shiba, Toshiro
Mifune, James Brown, Wah-Wah Watson and DJ Spooky
