How nice of us :)

Two girls. One guy. All melody-powered, flexi-rhythm, guitar-driven, multi-coloured rock loveliness.

Comprehensively ear-friendly and yet unlike anything else out there, The Hell I Am are simply throttling through the UK rock scene’s underbelly, their progressive and dynamic sounds packed into three and four minute nuggets, too sharp to be punk and yet too attitude-laden to be anything other. No bland powerchords or haircut vogue pseudo-rock here – it’s the nature of The Hell I Am to be innovative and expansive, hooks striking at you in quick succession, and not always from the corners you expect.

With its multi-layered, shape-shifting creativity on the one hand drawing comparison to Muse, its raw drive has won favour with fans of everyone from Gallows to Gwen Stefani. Meanwhile, The Hell I Am’s pulse and very lifeblood seems to have come – almost unconsciously – from a time before any of them were born, the heady days of New Wave: The Jam, Blondie and The Police.

Co-vocalists Becci Johnson and Sarah Firebrand (guitar and bass respectively) worked together in different bands for five years, earning their wings through self-organised overseas tours, winning rave reviews in ‘Kerrang!’ and getting airplay for their still developing songs on Radio 1 from Steve Lamacq and XFM. An appearance at Manchester’s prestigious In The City showcase, and support slots with The Buzzcocks and Ginger helped to drive their point home. Meanwhile drummer Christopher Reed was tearing it up with his own band, playing everywhere from York to New York, touring with artists twice his age, recording two albums and becoming a regular face on the festival circuit.

The Hell I Am honed their art the hard way, the proper way. They came together in 2009 in a last gasp explosion of need and frustration – the need to progress their evolving music, and the frustration with an incredibly dull rock scene in which identikit haircut bands were simply falling over themselves to reach the marketplace’s rotating knives. The Hell I Am is a middle finger to all that – it’s instead a delicious musical trip, melodies, head trips and feelings designed to colour the big picture in the trio’s head, intelligent but never less than singable.

With an introductory EP and gigs galore coming your way, Hell might not be such a bad place after all…
