'Petals Fallen Off The Sun' marks the return of critically acclaimed UK singer-songwriter Terry Emm. Praised by the likes of Bob Harris, Tom Robinson, Mojo and Uncut for his 2009 debut effort 'White Butterflies', this long awaited second album moves into more band orientated territory.
Whilst maintaining the English singer-songwriter sensibilities and intricate finger picked guitars of the former, the inventive and building drums of Vinnie Lammi and careful instrumental touches by producer Richard Durrant alongside Emm's confessional lyrics, result in a sound in the most part resembling what it would perhaps sound like if Nick Drake or Clifford T Ward fronted a band like Gravenhurst or Red House Painters.
At times, the production is stark and stripped back as in 'Monet', an Anji-esque folkie song where Emm is empathizing metaphorically with the life of the painter, his finger-picking ringing brightly and clear voice soaring above. In the sweet 'Sarah', a song for Emm's sister, the drums and accordian float along pleasantly and Durrant's nylon stringed guitar chimes poignantly, making way for Emm's emotive vocals. The sparkling guitar layered La's-esque 'Here' and almost Led Zeppelin-esque rocky 'Snow' add other flavours to this melting pot, almost as if each song is a different shaded petal fallen from the varied experiences and musical influences of this mature singer-songwriter and his collaborators.
'Petals Fallen Off The Sun' is available to pre-order now from http://www.longman-records.com and is scheduled to be released officially on 09th June 2012. A tour of intimate venues featuring guest accompaniment is planned for late April/May- watch http://www.terryemm.co.uk for confirmations.
