Music education, from middle school to college, has been elemental in the cultivation of Isabella Du Graf's passion of music. Isabella recently received a Bachelors degree in jazz performance from the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston. Her admittance gave her the chance to study with Dominique Eade, Rebecca Parris, John McNeil, Dave Holland, Cecil Mcbee, Rakalam Bob Moses, John Lockwood, Ran Blake and others.
At 22, Du Graf has gained tremendous recognition and respect from her accomplishments. "Ms. Du Graf is a spoonful of the outstanding talent coming out of the Pacific Northwest," raved Wynton Marsalis after awarding Isabella the Ella Fitzgerald Outstanding Vocalist Award for her rendition of Duke Ellington's "Rocks In My Bed" at the elite Essentially Ellington jazz competition hosted at Lincoln Center of May 2006. The same year as a high school senior, Downbeat magazine recognized Isabella's talent and awarded her the Outstanding High School Jazz Vocalist Student Music Award winner. The following year, Du Graf was again chosen by Downbeat as the 2007 Outstanding College Jazz Vocalist Student Music Award Winner. Whether performing shows at Tula's Restaurant and Jazz Club, to singing the national anthem at Qwest Field Stadium for the NFL Seahawks-Raiders game, Du Graf never fails to impress her audience. At a young age of 16, Isabella won the jazz vocalist competition hosted by the Seattle Kobe Sister City Assoc. at Dimitrious' Jazz Alley. This earned her the opportunity to travel to Kobe, Japan and represent Seattle, WA, performing with Minoru Ozone at the centennial celebration of jazz in Japan. In September 2005, after taking first place as the Alto jazz vocalist during the Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival in Moscow Idaho, Du Graf was featured on the cover of the Earshot Jazz Magazine as an uprising star. In 2004, she was a featured singer in the More Music at the Moore Theater getting the chance to sing with singer-composer Bobby McFerrin. But still, Isabella remains true to her roots. She acknowledges that her spark of interest in jazz music began at Eckstein Middle School where she began singing with the jazz band at 13. The Seattle Public School system has been blessed with some of the top music programs in the country. As a freshman at Roosevelt High School, Isabella was accepted into their prestigious vocal jazz group. "It was teachers like Moc Escobedo and Scott Brown, and places like Tula's Jazz Club, that gave me an opportunity to do what I loved and allowed me to learn what I know," she said. Isabella Du Graf has recorded two albums, Blame It On My Youth (2003) and more recently, Live At Egan's (2007) and is currently working on two albums, a jazz standards album and one R&B album debuting many original compositions. Both are expected to release in early 2012.
Isabella is humble about how much she has accomplished, but isn't resting on the comforts of early success. She continues to work hard on her craft and glean as much information as she can to take her passion as far as possible. Perhaps more impressive is how Isabella has carved out a place for herself in the music scene as a jazz vocalist on the rise, with chops and soulful confidence to win over even the most exacting and critical audience.
