Hailing from the world-renowned hip-hop hotbed of rural Oxfordshire, rapper Dr Syntax is a well-known figure in the underground British hip hop scene. His knack for witty social commentary, self-deprecating humour and intelligent wordplay, all delivered with his trademark charismatic style and bass-rich vocal tone, have earned him a legion of die-hard fans throughout the UK and beyond.
After a slew of well-received guest appearances from 2003 onwards (including his classic contributions to Foreign Beggars' 'Asylum Speakers' LP), Syntax dropped his critically acclaimed 'Self Taught' LP in 2007, receiving glowing reviews in Hip Hop Connection, IDJ, DJ and Echoes to name a few.
With beats from heralded producers such as Dag Nabbit, Pete Cannon and Bonobo affiliate The Evil Sun, the sound of Syntax's music ranges from prog rock-sampling head nodders to futuristic synth-led party stompers. As well as more traditional hip hop tempos, Syntax can drop double-time flows as fluidly as anyone from the UK's grime scene, as exhibited on his long-awaited sophomore album 'Benny Huge', released in December 2010.
As well as tearing up shows on a solo tip, Syntax is a peripheral member of the legendary UK crew Foreign Beggars. He toured extensively with them in 2010, which included several prestigious festival spots - the Glastonbury festival in England, Splash! festival in Germany, and playing to a 20,000 strong crowd at Hip Hop Kemp in the Czech Republic. Well tested on the live circuit in his own right, he has previously supported US heavyweights such as Wu Tang Clan, The Pharcyde, Slum Village, KRS One, RA The Rugged Man and many more.
In 2011, Syntax formed a new group, Matinee Hype, alongside singer Rebecca Stephens (The Pipettes), producer Pete Cannon and MC Derogatory (Tactical Thinking). They currently tour together, performing songs from Syntax's back catalogue, as well as tracks from their forthcoming LP, 'All Day'.
Outside of touring and recording, Syntax presents the 'C'mon Feet Elements Show' alongside DJ Andy Peek on Unity 92.8 FM, Greater Manchester's revered urban music station. He releases his music through Dented Records, one of the most prolific and highly respected hip hop/dubstep labels in Britain.
