The Dreadnots are a Pittsburgh Pennsylvania sample-based beat and vocal driven outfit that apply experimentation heavily in their sounds. Simultaneously tapping into the elements of hip-hop, noise rock, 60’s psych, improvised/ambient music, and lo-fi songwriting, they create an unpredictable take on new school avant electronic music. Formed in 2000, they’ve released a heap of limited edition cdr’s, tapes, floppy discs, and vcd’s, along with a pressed cd, on various homespun d.i.y. labels around PA. Their songs are built on non-linear variations: found sounds, am and shortwave radio squelches, gritty hip-hop sampling, effected turntable scratching, dark drum programming, and skronky guitar blasts all blend together at different times, interspersed with calculated rhyming. Live, their use of fucked up instrumentation in the context of continually evolving and open-ended sets have allowed them the freedom to scramble genres, while at the same time perplexing those that put hip-hop in a box.
