Andrew Fletcher, Martin Gore, songwriter Vince Clarke, and vocalist David Gahan formed Depeche Mode in 1976. Their eccentric name hails from a headline they spotted in a French magazine (Depeche Mode means "fast fashion").

After their single "Just Cant Get Enough" hit the Top 10 in the UK in 1981, Vince Clarke quit. Alan Wilder joined the band in 1982 and their second album, A Broken Frame, peaked in at 8 on the UK charts. Their songs and style became progressively darker as they tackled issues from religion and capitalism to racism and S&M.

By the '80s, Depeche Mode became more mystical and eccentric. Their 1987 album entitled Music For The Masses, thrust them into the American spotlight and they indulged in a sell-out world tour.

Although Depeche Mode underwent many changes and downfalls in the '90s (Wilder left the band in 1994 and Gahan attempted suicide in 1995), their adoring fans remained unhindered. Now Depeche Mode is releasing yet another album that is a tribute to their past, present and future.
