Black Noise has been in the making since the hip-hop culture began. A couple of 80's babies, Aarophat and Illastrate,, were born into it; and have been bred to make the music they have grown up around Drawing inspiration from everything from Ohio Players to The Liks, they built their foundation on traditional boom bap head nod music, reminiscent of the early 90's hip hop as they make it along the road less traveled."Classic shit" is their credo, and that level of hip hop is exactly what they deliver.

Illa says, " I want to be a cut above, making shit you can listen to ten years from now." Coming off their 07' collaborations on Aarophat's Rawkus 50 outing, Aarodynamix, this critically acclaimed team has come together to bring you The Black Noise LP.

The lead single MidWestKids is an ode to the region that birthed the sound that makes up Black Noise sound. Aarophat paints a gritty picture of the midwest, from the factory smoke stacks to the Buick Regals riding through the hood. The remix invites Rookie of the Year, Boog Brown, from Detroit, and Ohio native Small Eyez to shed some light on the region as well. Sure to be the banger that let cats know hip hop never died and is alive and well in the Great Plains. With a solidified supporting cast, the Noise manages to win the nods of the nonbelievers with high energy bangers like IN THE TRUNK ( http://www.zshare.net/audio/57087880825fabde/ )using the Ohio Players sample previously used by another Mid West Legend MC BREED (R.I.P.) on his classic "Aint no Future in Your Frontin".Definitely a joint for the whip and club this summer. Black Noise promises a sturdy middle finger towards the state of the rap game, and a black fist for the revolution the art. For too many this noise cannot and will not be heard; but those who listen intently, the truth will be seen as a brand new day.!

The Dirty Drum Mixtape review (Souteastern Performer)

The simplest way to define Illastrate's The Dirty Drum Mixtape is 23 tracks of pure energy and versatility. The album, which was produced and arranged entirely by Illastrate, offers classic hip-hop over melodies borrowed from soul, jazz, neo-soul and reggae. The CD opens, like many mixtapes, with a profanity-laced welcome from DJ EFN before smoothly transitioning into "40 Bars," featuring the lyrics and flow of Aarophat over a jazzy horn- and drum-dominated track. The high energy continues with "5 Kings," featuring GB Cees.

"Back to the Block," which features Mojo Swagger, is another excellent example of the energy that Illastrate brings to his tracks. "Akir Freestyle," which moves the CD back toward a more jazzy orientation, is an enticing — albeit too short — freestyle collaboration with the smooth Akir.

The old soul returns on "Oz," featuring Ozy, in which Ozy brags about getting his well-deserved respect. One of the most compelling tracks is "Big Money," featuring Butta Verses. The musical arrangement dominates to the point where the listener envisions a marching band horn section on stage behind the talented MC, confidently bragging about how much money he has to spend.

The CD takes an unexpected but pleasant turn toward reggae on "Lyrical Murdah" with Black Noise featuring Prophet. The enchanting beat and outstanding vocal arrangements end all too soon, leaving the listener yearning for more. One of the smoothest tracks on the CD is "Ready Freddy" with Willie Joe featuring Empress Raw, who together provide the listener with the unflattering definition of a Ready Freddy. Illastrate closes the CD with "This Goes Out" featuring Ill Elements (No Joke, Dolo and Aarophat).

The Dirty Drum Mixtape, with its diverse and unique sound, is definitely a good listen. Focused through a variety of MCs, Illastrate's talents as a producer are obvious. (Working Class Music, Bad Grama Records)
