The premium appreciated by many folds. That was then. This is now. My voice is currently insured for Half A Billion Euros. :-))! "IT GOES LIKE THAT." The legendary DENNIS ALCAPONE (real name Dennis Smith) was born in the Parish of Clarendon, Jamaica. The ska-rocksteady-reggae deejay-toaster was influenced by the great U Roy. Dennis Alcapone launched his career deejaying (rapping) for the still revered El Paso Hi-Fi sound system in 1969. Dennis Alcapone's flavored toasting and deejay skills made El Paso the leading sound system in the early 1970's. Chatting on El Paso definitely prepared Dennis for the recording studio.
U Roy was the first break-out deejay to record hits deejaying over tracks. Dennis Alcapone's mic skills and unique style challenged U Roy's dominance as top deejay on the Island during the fledgling stages of the deejay style. The friendly competition was intense between both artists. In 1971 and 1972 Dennis won back-to-back Deejay Of The Year awards.
Keith Hudson (who doubled as a part time ghetto dentist) produced
Dennis Alcapone's first recordings, in 1970. Dennis first hits with Hudson include 'Shades of Hudson,' 'Spanish Omega,' 'Revelation Version,' 'Maca Version' and 'The Sky's the Limit.'
In 1971 Dennis Alcapone recorded for Coxsone Dodd's Studio One label. Those sessions were followed by recording for producer Duke Reid and Treasure Isle label. Next was Bunny Lee on Orange Street. With his witty, half-spoken lyrics on hot rhythms, Dennis compiled a tall list of hits: 'Number One Station,' 'Mosquito One,' and 'Alcapone Guns Don't Argue' raced up the Jamaican charts. This success continued into 1972, with tunes like 'Rock To The Beat,' 'Love Is Not A Gamble,' 'The Great Woogie,' 'Teach The Children' and 'Musical Alphabet' established Dennis Alcapone firmly as a beloved international reggae icon.
Dennis Alcapone accomplished a lot in the early 70's. He recorded well over 100 songs and released three albums. Dennis worked with some of the greatest reggae producers including Coxsone Dodd, Winston Riley, Lee Perry, Joe Gibbs, Prince Buster and others. He toured Guyana and the UK. He was awarded Best Deejay twice by Swing Magazine. Dennis collaborated with many reggae legends including Dennis Brown, Augustus Pablo and Delroy Wilson.
By 1974 Dennis was living in United Kingdom but continued to tour as well as work in Jamaica. Through the late 70's he worked on making albums for Sidney Crooks, Bunny Lee and Count Shelly.
In the late 80's Dennis Alcapone's legendary status continues to grow via touring. He played gigs in Helsinki and WOMAD Festival '89 in Cornwall. Spring 1990, Dennis played Paris where he sold out two consecutive nights. In the later parter of 1990 he returned to Jamaica for three months recording on digital rhythms for Bunny Lee, Tappa Zukie and Prince Jazzbo. Since then Dennis has toured almost every year. He was billed in the Ariwa Showcase with Mad Professor, working 'longside artists such as Macka B and Tippa Irie. By 1994 Dennis Alcapone was recording for UK dub master Adrian Sherwood and released a 12" version of the classic Rome rhythm. In 1995 he returned to Jamaica for Heineken Star Time concert. This was his first appearance in Jamaica in twenty years.
In 1996 Dennis toured Japan, playing five cities on the Golden Rock Steady Tour which is part of the Japan Splash series. He also toured Italy with Mad Professor and then Spain with Alton Ellis. In 1998 Dennis return to Jamaica for Heineken Star Time. He also played Madrid and Naples in 1988. In 1999 Dennis toured Sweden, France, Germany, Amsterdam as well as multiple dats in England. In 2002 Dennis Alcapone performed at the Rototom Festival in Italy. He was also the first reggae artist to perform at the Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland July 2002. August '02 he played the Chiemsee Festival in Germany. To date Dennis Alcapone continues to tour Europe. Dennis Alcapone played Rebel Salute in Jamaica, January 15, 2011. Tour dates for Japan and USA are being built for 2011. Yea-yeeeeeeah. "It Goes Like That."
Dennis Alcapone has collaborated with just about all the Jamaican greats. He has performed with top reggae icons including Bob Marley.
Dennis Alcapone is a true legend who contributed to pioneering the deejay style. His deejay skills, vocal talent and musician-ship have earned him a well-deserved place in modern music history. Dennis Alcapone's fan-base is all-ages. Incredible!!
