"Demian Bell and The Maypole Blues Band" – Blue Feeling A review by David McleanDB & TMBB play what is simultaneously traditional blues rock and a more advanced jazz-influenced rocking blues. The guitar work, as one would expect of a man who has basically had an axe in his hands most of the time for four decades, is delicately crafted and very precise. Not so exaggeratedly precise, however, that the feeling falls asleep, as is unfortunately so often the case with players who spend too much time.Take "Flip Flop Fly", a cover of a Big Joe Turner classic. It's excellent and maybe not a song everyone knows, but it's absolutely perfect R&B, when "R&B meant R&B, not whatever it is that they say nowadays. The reason I would say that you need Demian Bell and his band in addition to the older classic white blues acts like The Yardbirds, is that the music sounds so much better and more modernly done. I don't mind listening to snap crackle and pop when I'm listening to Leadbelly, but not 60s records. If there's anything worse than snap crackle and pop, it's the obvious absence of it on a doctored recording. The Maypole's music is the real thing à la 2000s.Clapton is probably a better guitarist now than he was in 1965, but so is Demian Bell, but the difference is that Clapton doesn't hold himself so closely to the original sources of inspiration, the crazy old black men who invented the blues all those years ago. Obviously they don't sound like the Yardbirds did then, otherwise I wouldn't advise you to buy or download their music. They sound better. Bell has been compared with many other players, and, if you want to play that game, I would say Carlos Santana. But though that gives some feel of the music, I might also say George Thorogood – take a listen to "Texas Politician" – a nod in the direction of Cream, obviously, but a cool funny hard record. Or listen to "Can't Hit Back" – hard lively rock-blues that definitely can hit back (and that's a fact). "When You Can't Feel Nothing" is my favorite on the album however, classic slow blues that could have been done in the twenties, if they'd had the equipment then, that's how authentic the feeling is.So, basically, Bell and his band are the real thing. a true delight in this day and age and absolutely worth sitting next to your First and Second Wave blues albums. Maybe it's time for a new wave blues? If it is then this is the sort of stuff that should break first.

Demian Bell-Born in Chicago. He grew up in Maryland,Ohio, England and California. He was Classically trained on piano starting at age 7 and studied under Joseph Fasano ,who studied under Arturo Toscanini. Switching to guitar at age 13, Demian was professional by age 16 with his own band starting in California. A well known guitarist in Europe for many years. Demian has been playing music live throughout Europe for the last 28 years, with appearances in Holland, England, Germany, Spain, Jamaica, France, and Switzerland as well as extensively in his native United States. He has played with Van Morrison, Moulty & The Barbarians,Los Bravos,The Maypole of which he was an original founder and principle writer. He has recorded with Deodato,Teddy Pendergrass,Frank Cornelious, and many other artists. His musical compositions range from all genres and interests, and writes prolifically. No stranger to hard times, heartbreak and struggle, Demian's real talent is his "natural" improvisation and his hard earned "Feeling" for the Blues. When he plays "Black Beauty" his guitar, it is with High Energy with pure emotion and he never plays the same thing twice. Each performance is in "The Moment". Demian can surely be called a "Music Gypsy", always ready to go off on some new musical adventure in some new State or Country. Demian has shared the stage in recent years with guitar legends Albert Lee, Lulo Rheinhardt.(nephew of Django Rheinhardt) of Germany and Diego Cortez of Spain.More recently November 17,2007 with Tony Sheridan, the legendary rocker who had the Beatles as his backing band in the early 60's and many hits. Including My Bonnie and Skinny Minnie. The songs on this site are changed often, and Demian has a very large catalog of original songs that he will start putting up, so check back often. At the present time he occasionally works as a duo with "Lulo Reinhardt", a close friend and nephew of "Django Reinhardt" with their "Gypsy Blues Project". He has recorded for Colossus, Laurie Records, Pandisc Records, Streetbeat Records,Nouveaux Records, Earthtone Records, Avex Records in Japan. Demian is also a keyboardist with many recordings, original film scores and documentaries to his credit. He has a catalog of aprox. 400 recorded pieces of music in every imaginable musical style. The Maypole Lp is now making a comeback with the re- release of the original album on CD on Gear Gab Records, Denver,Colorado and clear Vinyl on Anopheles Records, San Francisco, California in 2006 and now the next Maypole album"Falling Angels" will be released in July 2008, featuring music from the mid 1970's also on the Gear Fab Record label.Their latest album recorded live will be released by Wemo Records Germany later in the summer 2009 Thanks for stopping by!!
