"Masters From Their Day"

Can a classic recording be produced in just one day?? Some incredibly talented folks have already shown us: Patsy Cline, Owen Bradley, Otis Redding, Tom Dowd, Elvis Presley, Sam Phillips, The Beatles, George Martin, James Brown. A lot of timeless records were produced in a single recording session - songs that we still sing at the top of our lungs.

Masters From Their Day is an on-going series of short documentaries focusing on artists making records. Each episode chronicles the efforts of a band and a record-producer as they attempt to record a new single in one day. The viewer experiences the real-time creative contemplations that go into the records being made by today's luminaries.

In their episode of Masters From Their Day, Deerhoof collaborate with an outside producer/engineer for the first time in their extensive career...and quite the producer it is. Chris Shaw has been integral to some of the most influential records of the past few decades, including Weezer's 'Blue Album', Public Enemy's 'It Takes a Nation of Millions To Hold Us Back' and 'Fear of a Black Planet', Tribe Called Quest's 'Low End Theory', not to mention his work with Keith Richards (a huge influence to Deerhoof), Bob Dylan...the list goes on.

Of course, it's always a risk when a self-driven DIY band goes into a big fancy studio with a big-time producer, so we knew this could get interesting, for better or worse...

The new single, 'Sexy, but Sparkly' (out now via the for-charity 7″ series LAMC), is a pop-art kaleidoscope of colors. The song is a new direction for Deerhoof, yet a fitting addition to their lexicon. The essence of Deerhoof -- Satomi Matsuzaki's signature pure-tone minimalism, Greg Saunier's drumming dynamism, the intricate guitar parts that create a sum of raw power - are all present, but they've never sounded quite like this. Chris Shaw pushes the Deerhoof narrative into an exciting new setting that is lively-yet-composed, raw-yet-shimmering, and completely enticing.
