“Latin. Rock. Soul. Roots.” Danny Salazar seems to have a different definition of “roots” than the average Western-shirt-bedecked “roots” musician roaming around town. This Texas native’s genre-mashing sound has as much roots-reggae — think Joe Gibb's gospel phase — as it does Norteño, and enough boogaloo and rock thrown in to melt faces like good music should: it’s simultaneously new and familiar, and that's just the “roots” side of Trova Urbana. But don't think they're hung up on a retro crutch. Tracks like “Here I Go Again” are unabashedly modern, radio-ready slices of perfect pop for the sorta-post-racial society we're living in today. Let's just say we could find enough people that aren't attending a Tea Party to make these monster hits, and the world would be a better place for it.
