RAFAEL CORTES es uno de los pocos compositores que une la tradición con la actualidad y que mantiene el flamenco puro, tocando moderno. Rafael Cortés nació el 21 de diciembre de 1973. Su abuelo Octavio Cortés Maya fue un guitarrista famoso en su ciudad natal, Granada. Teniendo solamente cuatro anos de edad debuta con su padre como acompanante. A la edad de 9 anos empieza a acompanar baile y cante, que es lo que realmente forma a un guitarrista flamenco. Cuando Rafael tenía 14 anos, su profesor de guitarra El Macareno decidió que el muchacho ya sabía todo lo que él podía ensenarle, y había llegado a un nivel técnico increíble. Rafael colaboró con muchos grandes nombres del flamenco y artistas de otras ramas, incluyendo a Carles Benavent, El Cigala, El Pirana, su prima hermana Rosa (OT), Javier Barón, Concha Vargas, Carmen Ledesma, Jonathan Darlington, Jose de Lucía, Domingo Patricio, María Serrano, Tommy Emmanuel, Juan Cortés, y muchos más. Es a partir del ano 1999 cuando grabó su primer álbum en solitario y comenzó a realizar giras con su propio grupo. Su toque maravilloso ha sonado además de en Espana, también en otros países como, Alemania, Holanda, Suiza, Austria, Bélgica, Polonia, etc. Su segundo trabajo discográfico Gitanos del Agua, ha resultado un éxito indiscutible ante el público y la crítica.
A pesar de su juventud, Rafael Cortés es uno de los mejores guitarristas de la actualidad. Su música es virtuosa y llena de temperamento. Su estilo personal, lleno de fuego, está hábilmente enriquecido con elementos del jazz y género clásico, dando como resultado una música apasionada y emocional con un toque moderno sin desviarse de la tradición flamenca.

RAFAEL CORTES is one of the few composers who unites the tradition with the present time and maintains pure flamenco, playing modern style. Rafael Cortés was born on 21 of December of 1973. His grandfather Octavio Cortes Maya was a famous guitarist in his native city, Granada. Only having four years of age he debuted with his father as an accompanist. At the age of 9 he begins to accompany dance and he singing, that is what it really forms a flamenco guitarist. When Rafael was 14 years old, his professor of guitar El Macareno decided that the boy already knew everything what he could teach him, and had achieved an incredible technical level. Rafael collaborated with many great names of flamenco and the artists of other branches, including Carles Benavent, El Cigala, El Piraña, Javier Baron, Concha Vargas, Carmen Ledesma, Jonathan Darlington, Jose de Lucia, Domingo Patricio, Maria Serrano, Tommy Emmanuel, Juan Cortes, and many more. It was in 1999 when he recorded his first solo album and began to make tours with his own group. His wonderful playing has sounded no only in Spain, also in other countries like, Germany, Holland, Switzerland, Austria, Belgium, Poland, etc. His second album work Gitanos del Agua, has been an unquestionable success for the public and the critic. In spite of his youth, Rafael Cortes is one of the best guitarists of the present time. His music is virtuous and full of temperament. His personal style is full of fire enriched with elements of the jazz and classic flamenco, giving as a result an enthusiastic and emotional music with a modern touch without turning aside of the flamenco tradition.

RAFAEL CORTES entstammt einer Flamenco Dynastie die ursprünglich in Granada ansässig war. Der Reiselust seiner Eltern verdankt Rafael seinen heutigen Wohnsitz, Essen in Deutschland. Hier wuchs er auf, gab seine ersten Konzerte im Alter von 5 Jahren und ist dieser Stadt und der Region bis heute treu geblieben.
Rafael Cortés entdeckte früh seine Liebe zur Gitarre. Sein Großvater schenkte ihm das erste handgefertigte Instrument im Alter von drei Jahren und übernahm gleichzeitig die ersten Lehrstunden. Der erste professionelle Gitarrenlehrer El Macareno beschloss, den Unterricht zu beenden, als sein Schüler 14 Jahre alt war. Die Begründung war einfach und überzeugend: Es gibt nichts mehr, was ich dir noch beibringen kann.
Im Laufe der Jahre perfektionierte Rafael Cortés seine Technik und seinen persönlichen Stil. Bei seiner musikalischen Entwicklung flossen immer wieder moderne klassische Elemente ein, genauso wie Elemente aus dem Genre Latin und Jazz. Auch wenn seine Interpretationen und eigenen Kompositionen von seinem ganz persönlichen Stil geprägt sind, die Tradition des Flamenco ist stets gegenwärtig.
1985 bestritt Rafael Cortés sein erstes Solokonzert in der Essener Zeche Carl, 1989 Gründung des Gitarren/Flamenco/Jazz Duos Duo Marcalo, 1990 saß er zum ersten Mal in einem Plattenstudio und 1995 komponierte er Titel für den Kinofilm Der Strand von Trouville.
Bei seinen ausverkauften Shows in Deutschland, Schweiz, Österreich, Polen, Tschechien, Ungarn, Holland und Spanien wird er enthusiastisch von Fans und Presse gefeiert. Standing Ovations des Publikums sind bei Rafael Cortés keine Seltenheit, und selbst die einstigen Gitarrengötter wie Larry Corryel kamen auf die Bühne und küssten knieend seine Hände. Auch den Gitarrengott Paco de Lucia supportete er bereits. Bei seinen Live Shows wird Rafael Cortés von wechselnden Musikern begleitet. Zur Standard Formation zählen ein zweiter Gitarrist, Percussionist, Bass, Sänger und Tänzer.
