Combover are a raucous, yet polite and incredibly well nourished pack of jerks whose unhinged stage antics and bizarre sounds have delivered a short and sharp eclectic shock to the Melbourne underground music scene.

Their goal? Blurring genre lines by borrowing furiously from as many different and contrasting styles as possible. Best described as experimental and wildly creative, Combover have a solid grounding in Dadaist grindcore and avant-jazz, with multi-stylistic hiccups into bent reggae, Latino tomfoolery, top 40 slaughter, drone-rock, no wave punk/funk, noise, classical influences, musique concrète and country n’ western. All this utilizing a basic a rock line-up augmented with unconventional instrumentation, including clarinet, bassoon, saxophones, junk percussion, tape manipulation, and prepared instruments to mold these genres into an unclassifiable mass that is truly their own.

Combover have been gigging solidly for two years in many of Melbourne’s top live music venues including Arthouse, Noise Bar, “The Make it Up Club” at Bar Open, The Laundry, the Glasshouse, Collingwood Town Hall and the Brunswick Hotel. Last year they performed a special Fringe festival night at Pony alongside Umläut, the brainchild of Bär McKinnon, former sax player from Mr Bungle and the Secret Chiefs 3 and, designed a month long residency at The Tote, performing with experimental heavyweights such as Thembi Soddell and Joe Talia, Mousetrapreplica and New York composer David Shea, who called the Combover experience “unbelievable”.

Their live show is unpredictable, spontaneous and manic with generous helpings of theatrical masochism and comedic absurdities. It is just as often bone crushingly heavy or abstract and hushed as it is bouncy, bright and cartoon-like. Those who come to the shows regularly can attest that they are treated with something completely unique each time, as each show is prepared especially for the occasion.

Combover’s live performances differ from the average rock’n roll outing and are a welcome antidote to an increasingly homogenized live music scene where the norm is three chords and gorgeous hairdo. Combover’s hair might be thinning, but they are definitely here to provide the proverbial “fourth chord” for those of us who want little more out of life!

Having just recently finished mixing their as yet untitled debut album, the plans for the future are to unleash this music to the masses, beginning with a CD launch, meanwhile playing as many gigs as they can physically withstand. The album is looking for wider distribution so one day Combover will be available in the racks of your local music retailer, thereby developing a wider fan base than their already very loyal following of foul smelling creative types, bewildered rock fans, and escaped lunatics. This means Combover can and will travel to a town near you… and they ADORE home cooked meals and spirited discussions with your octogenarian Grandparents.
