Ben's been singing ever since he can remember, and he's loved singing ever since he can remember. Whether it be Mozart's queen of the night aria when he was four (in key one might add), Gershwin when he was ten, pearl jam when he was fourteen, or his own songs in highschool, he has always truly loved to sing.
Ben started playing harmonica at age 13 singing and performing in a high school music class, and his interest in art started to grow there. The teacher of the music class, Ken Michalik, encouraged him to perform and expand. Michalik booked Ben's first gigs, and even lent him and a few other students school instruments to start playing out.
After moving to Community high school, Ben hooked up with local band Comatose Collin as their lead singer/harmonica player and stayed with them until late 2007. It was with this band that Ben started making a name for himself and building a reputation as a solid melodic lead singer and talented writer, not to mention a mean harmonica.
Over time Ben has played with national acts, traveled the country playing venues ranging from seedy to the suave, and each time giving it his all. "Of course i'm going to do my best every time," Ben said with a matter-of-fact grin, "I enjoy it too much not to."
Some press mentions about Ben Balmer:
"The vocal work of Ben Balmer is charismatic; he is able to adjust the to the feel of each song, and as such, becomes not the feature of the song, but a true part of the music."
-Houseofgigs.com
"{Ben's} lyrics speak of the road, love, little joys and what seem almost like reworked parables of the way the world works.{his} lyrics are devoid of pomp and circumstance or self-consciousness inherent in other musical genres."
-Verde News
"Soulfully Sweet"
-Detroit Metro Times
"Pop with a somewhat literary bent. goes great with weed"
-Foxit Reader, Detroit
