BAND HISTORY
Cocos Lovers are an eight piece band from the cinque port of Deal on the Kent coast. Formed in 2008, they are a young close knit band in the truest sense of the word – made up of husbands, wives, brothers, sisters and friends. The chemistry created by this interesting group of musicians is producing both critically acclaimed recordings and live performances. This have recently seen them feature in The Independent, Froots Magazine and Acoustic Magazine, as well as on BBC6 Music (' I Love It' - Guy Garvey).
After forming in 2008 they traveled to Europe and spent three months playing, writing and exploring different ways of living, which has influenced many of the tracks featured on their debut album 'Johannes'. The albums songs build on the bands close relationships, their traveling tales and thirst for music.
The rousing anthem 'A beggars land' was inspired by the bands stay in a squat in Amsterdam called ADM. It was here that the band were shown incredible hospitality and gained a fascinating insight into alternative living. The song 'Johannes' was written when visiting the socialist community in Germany called Niederkaufungun. Their European tour took them to Belgium, Holland, Germany, the South of France and Spain where they settled in the Riberola valley between Valencia and Barcelona. For their keep they worked the Spanish land by day and by night played venues and busked. It was here that 'Dead in the Water' was written.
Their sound is a heady mix of traditional English Folk, full band harmonies, and influences of the American Deep South all off-set against bursts of Eastern and African rhythms. The music that they are producing is always beguiling, mixing hope with sadness in a rich collage of musical texture.
The band have had a summer packed full of UK festivals and events, which included their debut at this years Cambridge Folk Festival and also perfomances at Green Man, Secret Garden Party, Lounge on the Farm, to name but a few. As well as there live shows, they are known for their impromptu street performances along the pavements and cobbles of cities such as Canterbury, Norwich, Brighton and Cambridge.
In the 2 years since the band formed they have released two critically acclaimed EP's, which sold out within weeks of release and have supported the likes of Mumford & Sons, Alessis Ark, 6 Day Riot, Fionn Regan and Danny & the Champions of the World.
