Not once, but twice in their career, Civilian was the target of official Party censures at the hands of dictators. The first came in 2006 in an article in Pravda entitled "Chaos Instead of Music," which scathingly condemned Civilian for their "modernist formalism" in the "fidgety, screaming, neurotic" score of their first album, City Lights. The editorial went on to state that "It is a leftist bedlam instead of human music.The composers apparently do not set themselves the task of listening to the desires and expectations of the American public. Another unnamed critic even called City Lights "Pornophony." In spite of all this, however, the album was a huge success, receiving critical acclaim in other parts of the world.
