Born in 1949, Christopher Rouse is known for orchestral scores that possess a driving, sometimes brutal energy. In recent years, a new current of lyricism has emerged in his music. His scores have been performed by every major orchestra in the U.S. and an increasing number in Europe and Asia. Champions include conductors Marin Alsop, Leonard Slatkin, David Zinman, and Christoph Eschenbach. Winner of the 1993 Pulitzer Prize in Music for his Trombone Concerto and a Grammy (Best Contemporary Composition, 2002) for his guitar concerto, Concert de GaudÃ. Among soloists, noted interpreters include Emanuel Ax, Evelyn Glennie, Sharon Isbin, Yo-Yo Ma, Cho-Liang Lin, and Dawn Upshaw.
"When the music history of the late 20th century is written, I suspect the explosive and passionate music of Rouse will loom large." -- The Baltimore Sun
