A dude who seems to also look at the world in a different way, who's American but seems to have a global outlook, is Zen-1, President of Armageddon Records. He's a rap artist whose MySpace page is www.myspace.com/chozenwon. Zen-1 has a post 9-11 world view thats reflected in his songs. This isn't gangsta rap, its global rap. With infectious beats and precise song sampling, Zen-1 addresses serious issues and explores the political situation through his songs. His Myspace page is full of material, and the layout is great. He's a comics fan, too, so when ou pull it up you're likely to see X-Men or Captain America looking back at you. I played the music for my Russian roommates and they all dug it (except for Ivan who dosen't listen to any music at all and didn't participate in the downloading). Like myself, I get the sense through his lyrics that Zen-1 has gone through some tough times. But he's used those experiences to create music. It's a good page to review at the start of this most audacious summer. Like learning from the Russians, listening to Zen-1 songs has given me a new way to look at things. And I like the view I'm seeing these days.

Deep In The Hip Hop Heart Of Asbury.
Not just another basement tape, instead we were surprised withe the
feeling of another undiscovered talent in the form of Chozenwon;
Chozenwon's 4 song cassette was (Co)produced by fellow "Buryhood rapper
Ja'Kei, at Ja'Kei's Liquid Remedy Studios, and found this rapper more
attuned to the cosmos than a 40 and his 'ho. On "Gates of Music",
(produced by K-Dubs/Cue Labz)a caliope-like sythkey track curls around
this psyco-celestial brag about CW's kinetic powers, as he looks down
at his life from far above Earth; While the young artist raps fast with
hardly a gap in between, he sounds more focused and emotional where it
counts. An about-face in style next to the old school funky sample that
steers his "Whole Repetoire"(produced by Donny Harrell) into choosing
between life and death and opening his mind, with "words to use,/to
disturb the youth/" & "give yo red neck a red necklace/," The attitude
here remains self-assured and so listenable, and the vocal sample makes
it dark and funky enough to dance to. While the spacey jazz/electronika
of "Select the Alien Child" combines phrasing like "surround you in a
telekinetic bubble,/ and then bash u with the hubble,/" and other rhymes
about the desires of the Alien Child into an overall mix that fit this
non-illin' child to a T cube. While there's more to today's Bury rap
scene than just Chozenwon and Ja'Kei, their music easily stands apart
from most other local hiphop, in a backdrop fragmented with cliched
thug jive and Snoop Doggy Dog, or Eminem clones. Again, both artists
will take you by surprise with the quality of their original material
and production values.
