Angels Glue

With the star-dusted electric grime of "Cocaine Teenage Riot" too the closing time fiddles and mandolins of "Iron Trains" Ceti Alpha moves through their sonic topography with a fiery burst of burning roses, cheap tattoos and distant French hills on their 2010 release Angels Glue.

Ceti Alpha has been producing their brand of Dartmouth Downtown (DDT) Nova Scotian music since 2006 (The Street 2006, Telemetry 2008). Though Angels Glue is their third record it in a sense feels like their first as it is packed with a bright crisp energy that seems to have laid dormant on previous releases. Produced and recorded by Nick Bevan-John and Michael Jackson, Angels Glue is a colorful record of Garnet Gnomes, synthesizers and Leopard Men fronted by the bandstandesque voice of Ceti Alpha's Nick Bevan-John.

Bevan-John has been involved in music most of his life. After playing in an early formation of The Guthries, Bevan-John went out to play, record, and produce over 14 records for Jack MacDonald and The Hotel Faces. A band fronted by an enigmatic homeless street poet, they received local notoriety before retiring to separate musical directions.

Surrounded by the talents of Michael Jackson, James MacNeil, Ken LeBlanc, Mike Riley, Suzanne Demeter, Grant Mitchell, David Bradshaw, Ryan McGrath, Mike O'Neil, Tim Baker, Kelly L. MacDonald, Jonathan Shaw, John Shaw, Gordon MacDonald and fronted by lead singer Nick Bevan-John, Angels Glue travels like a wild creature through the vibrant underground of the world of Ceti Alpha. In the spirit of the longing, the brawling and the bother comes this 14 track full release. Angels Glue should stick to your stereo like blood red pomegranate.

Rarely does one ever hear of a hot new band from the East Coast. Nova Scotia-based Ceti Alpha are out to change that - Earshot

Ceti Alpha is full of songs that sound like they're drifting across the harbour over dark water at night. They're quiet but intense, fading but present - The Coast

There are those few bands that really do seem to have a different sound, or at least, seem like they're trying to forge one. And that's why I mention a couple of indie bands this week, starting with Ceti Alpha -The Chicago Star
