Canola Tenderfoot began life after the joining of two people, musically and in matrimony. Having both spent several years recording and gigging around the UK with other Bristol bands, the Tenderfeet retreated to their Bristol home studio in 2004 and began working alone on a project given the name of Canola (the Celtic goddess of music) Tenderfoot (a novice).
With no agenda, other than to make the best music they can, Canola Tenderfoot utilise electronics, ambience and real-life instruments to make beats, grooves and tunes. Sat atop this musical mountain you will find songs about love, loss, hope, frustration, friendship and getting wasted.

'a true gem of a debut album.it rages with a political outlook at points courtesy of some incredibly poignant and memorable vocals and samples. When man and machine work in such perfect harmony, nature and technology, hand in hand, then moments of awe-struck beauty can emerge.' - Reverb Magazine
'.a deliciously balanced cocktail of dub drilled lunatic electronics that prickle and purr with the definable tug of sparsely toned sultry soul.' -
Singled Out
'Fans of good, old trip-hop should be very satisfied. Today's hiers of
Bristol tradition are doing well or even better and better.' - 80bpm.net (translated)
Most of the tracks fit common understandingof trip hop. We got some dub background sounds ("Another sorry tale"), synthesizer parts close to classic ambient music ("Pili pala") and some massive bass parts ("What is good").
On the other hand we hear some rich guitar, piano, violin and vocals merging into the beat. Viki sings in a dreamy way, transforming her voice with electronics from time to time, what makes her sound a little like Beth Gibbons from Portishead. When rapper B-Leaf joins her, Canola Tenderfoot feels like early Massive Attack.
But it's not so plain along the way. Mr and Mrs Shirley like to move into some other genres, like acoustic psytrance (?) ("Root and branch"), indie-pop ("Time's Table") or rich ambient music ("Summum Bonum", "First Come First Served"). These ambient tracks sound especially well due to duets ability to combine dub beats, electronics and vocals. You will enjoy listening of "Winning is for losers"' - GAZ-ETA, Poland (translated)
'This rather fine debut album is a refined collection of soulful cleansing melodic grooves, words and uplifting blissed-out very mellow tunes' - The Organ
The album was launched at Soho Bar in Bristol on Saturday 10 November. The party was fuelled by DJ sets from Jon Kennedy, DJ Annon Lee, The Basic and Viki & Owen themselves. Also showcased were a total of 6 videos to tracks from the album specially made for the launch night. These have been made by (in no particular order) Mikes Coles (Malicious Damage label boss), Zyga, Silly Goose animations, Chris Suddaby, David Wright & B.L.C.

"A welcome return for one of B365's personal favourites, Canola Tenderfoot follow up their debut album Winning Is For Losers with a free EP available from their website. The ethereal sound they honed on that release is surprisingly toughened up here; it's evident there's been some serious work undertaken in galvanising the beats of producer Owen Canola. On Lock Out this works very well, with the sensual vocals of Viki Canola snaking around frenetic drumwork and buzzing keys, yet still reflecting the sparse, candlelit warmth prevalent on their debut.
Nothing Set In Stone harks back to the Canlola Tenderfoot of old, with breathless shards of vocal and melody intertwined in a looping groove that more acerbic critics might label indicative of the genre that dare not speak its name, t**p h*p. But if you strip away the accumulated baggage that comes with a name like that, what are we left with? Simply put, Canola Tenderfoot reference the finer elements of downtempo electronica and twist it into their own strange shapes, and it sounds all the better for it.
Whilst Nothing Set In Stone and Play On might sit with the more orthodox material from their debut, Lock Out and Vilnius speak of a fresh direction which is maybe thanks in part to Owen's growing confidence as a producer through other remix projects. With a sharper, darker approach to beats and vocals, both these tracks are definitely the stronger of the four presented here. If you haven't picked up their debut album it comes highly recommended, and in the meantime download this EP to get to know the Canola Tenderfoot way." - Byte blog B365
