'MONSTROUSLY TALENTED!' - The Guardian 'UTTERLY INFECTIOUS' - Rough Trade'DEEPLY UPSETTING' - Practical PoultryProducer Paul Croley, although a common misperception, is not a DJ. After many Years being a drummer, then studio sound engineer, he began writing music under the CAKEBOY moniker. Inspired by Brighton’s emerging Big Beat scene he bought some studio kit and began making tunes which combined electronic dance with rock/metal & injected it all with a healthy dose of humour. What followed was a constant stream of DIY mini albums, all brimming with ideas and fearlessly straddling genres, which he released/gave away wherever he went. Before long he was persuaded by a local promoter to take it to the stage & was soon well received by Brighton’s clubbing population. Over the next few Years he began turning up at festivals, entire studio under his arm, and performing his own material wherever he could blag a slot. News spread of his exciting live set and kooky stage antics (often involving the messy business of launching gateaux into the crowd!) and soon was playing bigger & better events. In 2004 he took the title of best dance act in Glastonbury Festival’s first ever ‘Unsigned Contest’, performed in the main Dance Arena & has been back every Year since! After several single releases & his debut album in 2005 he has found a new home with forward thinking MUTATE RECORDS who understand and support Cakeboy’s need not to be tied to one style and to do what he wants with the reassurance that whatever he turns out, you’ll be able to dance to it!
VJ DOUBLETHINK
Matt Gallop is a talented visualist with a history in the free party scene who has mastered the art of programming/jamming visual clips to enhance audio performances. In 2001 whilst part of Brighton DJ/VJ team THE VIDIFIENDS he began working with Cakeboy to expand upon his live set & try to create a more interactive & entertaining stage show. The chemistry was there and soon they were presenting cleverly sync’d projections as well as turning live cameras on the crowd in order to create some mind boggling effects! This led to offers of impromptu performances with other artists such as DREADZONE, THE HERBALIZER and most recently RED SNAPPER’s spin off project TOOB. He is an integral part of the Cakeboy audio/visual experience!
