My earliest memory is of tearing at the rotted brown cloth on back of an upright piano and playing in the dust while my father played the Honky tonk train blues, accompanied by his thick heavy nails clattering the ivory keys as he played. Being the third oldest of seven, space in our small house was hard to find so I’d spend many hours behind the upright piano whilst my dad’s band rehearsed. The upright piano vibrated through the floor and my whole body. Sometimes the upright piano was joined by double bass, saxophone and a red guitar with f shaped sound holes which we were not allowed to touch, well, we not allowed to touch it when the adults were around. As I grew older and big enough to sit in a chair unsupported, I would watch the

hands of the guitarist playing chords and complicated solo runs up and down the fret board, i didn’t need to know the names of those chords as I could tell by listening they complimented the piano perfectly. The metal brushes on the snare drum brushed out a rhythm as timely as a ticking clock. The warmness of the double bass notes thudded and shuddered while the saxophone shrilly sang out, Well, this was enough for me……

I am asked today by musicians I play with, how do you know that tune, I don’t know is my answer, but I suppose it may have engrained its self in me from dust and the sounds form the back an upright piano.

Now doing solo gigs and can also be seen playing with.
