Radio Ready is the debut album of Bungalo 6, a nine-person funk collective that brings a fresh twist to pop music. Combining elements of funk, R&B, rock, jazz, latin and even gospel, the CD blurs genre boundaries and reclaims the soulful excitement of groups like Earth Wind and Fire, James Brown, Aretha Franklin and Tower of Power. Featuring sassy vocals backed by powerful dance grooves and funky horn lines, Radio Ready certainly lives up to its name.

Founded in 2006 by Virgina-based composer/ trumpet player Mark Ingraham, Bungalo 6 is comprised of some of the most talented young musicians in the Richmond area, many of whom have recently graduated from Virginia Commonwealth University’s renowned jazz program. Although the band is only two years old, many of the members have been performing together since their early college years. These long-standing friendships have been a major advantage to the group’s dynamic both on and off the bandstand. While nine buddies getting together and making music may seem like all fun and games, their focus and professionalism clearly cuts through in the finished product. Deceptively experienced for their age, members of the band have already shared the stage with artists such as the Dave Mathew’s Band, the Roots, Buddy Guy, John Legend, Wyclef Jean, the Temptations, Chaka Khan, tap dancer Savion Glover, Boney James, Chuck Mangione, Robert Randolph and the Family Band, Soulive, Dirty Dozen Brass Band, Karl Denson’s Tiny Universe, and jazz greats including Clark Terry and Mulgrew Miller.

Ingraham’s concept for the group developed through his songwriting. He states, “I wrote a lot of my tunes with specific musicians in mind, long before I told anyone about my idea for Bungalo 6.” Radio Ready’s twelve original tracks not only showcase the talents of individual players, but also the band’s versatility as a whole. Most impressive, however, is Ingraham’s ability to package the jazz influenced, musical complexity of his composition in a way that appeals to a wide audience. From rock anthem “Strong Enough” to the gritty funk of “Talkin’ Dirty”, this album is just honest, good music, no matter your taste. One thing is certain for Bungalo 6: Radio Ready is sure to be the first of many great albums to come.
