Brother Reade is a group consisting of producer Bobby Evans and rapper Jams F. Kennedy, situated in the epicenter of Los Angeles explosively nascent electronic music scene. As is clear from the diversity of styles on their new release on Crossfaded Bacon *THE DRAMA EP,* the duo are keenly focused on creating tunes that reflect a Beat Scene/Dubstep and Dance Music awareness that is also steeped in a distinctly Southern Rap tradition. Individual efforts by the duo reflect this duality. For example, Jams F. Kennedys recent Women Overseas/Play Doe was a vocal version of a Joker/Rustie track for the Dubstep LA compilation that morphed the original bass tune into a full-on Southern Rap anthem. Likewise, Bobby Evans' Delicious Vinyl single Freakazoid Robots owed as much to certain strains of techno as it did to Miami bass/freestyle while he also produced a wide range of club-focused official remixes for Mr. Vegas, Peaches, and Telepathe amongst others.
Having shared the stage with everyone from hip-hop legends Wu Tang Clan and the Clipse to Dance Music celebrities Girl Talk and Steve Aoki, Brother Reade is very clearly aware of their many influences and *THE DRAMA EP* showcases this awareness in epic, forward-thinking fashion. While the original mixes of each of the three compositions on this EP are very clearly representative of a Beat-Scene-Meets-Southern-Rap ethos, each of the remixes takes the original song into an entirely new direction. Emynd pushes the title track "Drama" further into that same dirty Southern tradition with sputtering 808 hats and claps and booming bass, while also adding the trademark Dubstep LFO bass wobble into the mix. His "Southern Man" reinterpretation of "Southern Boy" has a mid-90s Southern rap production influence while LA-based Dim Mak affiliate Them Jeans provides a massive Electro House re-interpretation of the same song. Producer wunder-kind Scott Matelic rounds out the EP with his haunting, minimalist synthetic boom-bap approach to "Impala." But, not be lost in the various production aesthetics is the excellent rapping of Jams F. Kennedy whose voice, flows, and lyrics make up the only constant running through each of the tunes on this release. Available December 22nd, Crossfaded Bacon is very proud to present Brother Reade's *THE DRAMA EP* and its profound look into the eccentric present/future of music while remaining deeply indebted to its past influences and traditions.
