WAKE UP 253 !! WRITE UP ABOUT BROKEN OARS.
It was a long night of punk rockery and who better to top it off then BROKEN OARS,
anouther tacoma punkrock band that is always a treat to see jump on stage : or off. it seems that they always bring their best to the show.ike is never standing in the same spot for long, he gets you exicited and makes you long to see that circle pit open up.BROKEN OARS is fast and dirty, just the way we want our punk around t-town. we all have our scummy moments and they dont let you forget that. definetly some honest punks, just working hard to be heard, and im more than happy to support that. if you dont feel compelled to shout with them then shout for them, even if you dont know the words.thanks for coming out tacoma and supporting some more awsome punk rock, keep up the good work.

Tacoma Weekly,,

Broken Oars brings together veterans of the local punk rock scene in an outfit that is building a fan base locally and along the West Coast with their energetic live shows.
TACOMA-based band consists of Ike shanaman on lead vocals and front man, Victor Sheneman and Steve Hagel on guitar, Poppy on bass and Rick Lytle on drums.
Shanaman, Sheneman and Hagel started the band about four years ago. At first it was a side project, as the three were members of another punk band called Cross Bones.
They knew Poppy as he played in another band in their practice facility at the time.
The original drummer in Broken Oars was a schoolteacher who ended up leaving as his work conflicted too much with his band responsibilities. Lytle replaced him about two years ago. He knew some of the members from being involved in the local scene and had played in a band that opened for Broken Oars at a show in Bremerton.
“Everything fell into place,” Shanaman observed.
The band has released two albums. The second, “Go Insane,” was released earlier this year.
Hagel left the band and just recently rejoined Broken Oars. In his absence they employed several guitar players and for a while operated with just four members. Now he is busy learning material from the second album in order to play shows with the group.
“Now we have the whole family back in order,” Shanaman remarked.
The band’s name came about in a conversation at a club in Seattle, where the founding members were hanging out and watching other bands. Cross Bones was in the midst of breaking up and they needed a name for their side project. Someone made a crack about paddling up the creek with broken oars to describe the crossroads in their musical endeavors.
Their logo depicts wings and an anchor. Shanaman said it symbolizes a power struggle, as the wings want to soar and the anchor attempts to keep them from taking flight. “No anchor is ever going to hold us down,” he remarked. “We refuse to lay down and die.”
Some material for their first album originated when Hagel, Sheneman and Shanaman were doing construction work on the Olympic Peninsula. They would bring acoustic guitars along on the ferry ride to the jobsite.
Most of the lyrics on the first album stemmed from Shanaman’s life experiences. For him it was a way to let some angst and anger out of his system. “It was either that or go fight at the bar,” he said. He and Sheneman wrote the lyrics on the latest album.
Sheneman said it is important whether music and lyrics fit with Shanaman’s vocal style. “There are all these questions,” he noted. “We still do not always know what direction we are going.”
Shanaman marvels at Sheneman’s ability to play numerous instruments. “Victor is a prodigy,” he exclaimed.
Some songs begin with Sheneman bringing in an idea to practice. “It eventually sounds different as people put their two cents in,” he remarked.
Sometimes Sheneman will play some riffs and Shanaman will hum a melody. Broken Oars songs are notable for the strong role background vocals play. “The vocals need to lead the song,” Sheneman remarked.
With two guitarists back in the lineup, Sheneman said the songwriting will be revised for new material.
Shanaman said they are not obsessed with rock-stardom. “We know we are not going to become millionaires,” he said.
“We are having fun,” Sheneman added.
Broken Oars are five guys clearly enjoying their music and entertaining their fans.
