HOTBOX: BY D EFINITION

WHAT is a HOTBOX?

WHO is HOTBOX?

WHERE is HOTBOX?

WHAT : The “HOTBOX” refers to – 1.) the sweat chamber that was the original HOTBOX recording booth with no A/C, muggy South Florida weather, and was in uncomfortable proximity to water heater. 2.) the adage that resulted when PRODUCER Andre “BRISS” Brissett coined “Time to get back in the HOTBOX” whenever resuming a session. 3.) the name of the Jazz Band lead by MUSICIAN Andre “BRISS” Brissett that used to play weekly at the Marlin Hotel in South Beach.

WHO : Andre “Briss” Brissett is the beat inside the HOTBOX.

WHERE : The HOTBOX is anywhere Andre “Briss” Brissett catches a vibe. The HOTBOX studio is hidden somewhere in South Florida :-P

THE BEAT IN THE HOTBOX

As another distinguished Alumni of the Dillard High Performance Arts Music Program, Andre “Briss” Brissett destroyed his first drum set at the age of two and has been beating on stuff tearing through every instrument since. “When the music is inside you, its gotta get out.” His first memories are of Miami… another J’American kid growing up in the shadow of that Coppertone Billboard off 826 with the dog pulling the little girls pants down. By the time he was eight, he was playing drums at church, was fairly fluent at piano. He began playing anything he could find : Recorder, Flute, Baritone, Trombone, Clarinet with God anointed proficiency. In 6th grade, when he started with the Saxophone as an elective, the teacher taught him how to read music (and then there was REALLY no stopping him).

SPENDING A NIGHT IN TUNISIA

When Andre landed at Dillard, Leroy "Daddy" Gibbs changed his world in a moment when he introduced him to Dizzy Gillespie’s “Night in Tunisia.” “As a saxophonist, as a kid, hearing Night in Tunisia for the first time blew my mind.” Add to that Gibb’s full repertoire which would include such influences as Earth Wind and Fire, Barry White, and the entirety of classic Jazz, music had its hooks in Andre – and Jazz had his soul. “It gave the music God was always playing in my head a larger range, a wider scope…like a completely new dimension.” Having already defined himself as a drummer, saxophonist, and Jazz piano/keyboard player, love of music and an amazing ear had Andre producing at about sixteen. He composed and produced an entire musical score for the Boy & Girls Club/ Creative Arts Unit musical production. A program for which, as an adult, he became Musical Director. Andre never stopped making music. In fact, TODAY, Andre “Briss” Brissett is very likely at the HOTBOX Studio still striving to let the whole world hear what’s playing in his head.
