Matthew Williams has been in a state of perpetual performance since 2001. He started by building a loyal fan base in the West Georgia town of Carrollton with the jam funk outfit Dysfunktion Junktion. With this group he soon broke into the Atlanta club scene playing the Brandyhouse, Jake’s Roadhouse and numerous other venues great and small. Matthew is a multi-faceted performer who writes songs influenced mainly by Folk, Rock and old-time country music. Equally adept at acoustic and electric guitars Matthew’s collection of stringed instruments is always growing.
Williams made another great leap into touring after joining the southern-rock based group Captain Soularcat in 2002. Captain Soularcat took Matthew far outside of Georgia with tours that spanned the nation, including California’s High Sierra Festival all the way down to Florida’s Down on the Farm festival. With this group Matthew sang harmonies in addition to lead on several of his own compositions. By this time his electric guitar prowess became second to none. His guitar chemistry with Soularcat’s Benji Shanks made the group a formidable live act. His contribution to the group can be heard on their 2004 CD “Three Rivers Point.” It was during this time that Matthew started his own record label Bref Row records to help promote the music that was being made in West Georgia. Matthew built the first Bref Row recording studio in his home and adapted himself into a wonderful audio engineer. Bref Row is still very much alive to this day and is used by Matthew to promote shows and release solo albums.
Matthew’s musical career seemed to accelerate at hyper speed following his induction into jam grass pioneers Blueground Undergrass in early 2005. During his time with Blueground Undergrass, Matthew became an extremely versatile acoustic guitar picker as well. His love for traditional music and rock blossomed his acoustic and electric guitar playing into his very own unique style. He wrote a majority of the songs on Blueground’s 2005 release “Faces”, an album that features jam greats Jimmy Herring and Col. Bruce Hampton.
When Blueground decided to stop touring in 2008 Matthew formed a new group called The Granfalloons with some of his BGUG bandmates . The Granfalloons is an excellent portal for everything Matthew has to offer. The Granfalloons released their debut record "Songs To Sing" in Nov. 2008. "Songs to Sing" features several of Williams powerful songs and has become a great success with Americana fans worldwide.
In November of 2009 Matthew founded The Cowtown String Band with several good buddies. Cowtown is an old-time string band with a vast repertoire of original and tradition tunes. Although this band was formed as nothing more than a fun side project, Cowtown has quickly become on of Williams' main interests and continues to grow beyond not only the walls of Carrollton but is expanding all over the great state of Georgia.
Williams averages over 200 shows per year, and continues to spread his heartfelt words as a songwriter. Matthew constantly participates in numerous live radio performances, record store promo gigs, music festivals, weddings and more. Whenever he is at home Matthew often gives guitar lessons, performs solo acoustic gigs and builds effects pedals.
