Derek Shaun Ellis II was born in Compton, CA to teenaged parents in the year 1984. He was a very energetic kid who often got into trouble at school because, as he says, “he was bored”. This is all the more reason why his parents were elated when he found something that would keep him occupied, music, particularly rap. A fan of rap music since the age of 7, Derek realized he had more than just a love for this style of music, it became his passion. At the age of 12, he began honing his craft by writing and rapping his own music. Spitting and flowing with his natural and raw talent, people began to take notice to the adolescent phenom. Two people in particular were his older cousin Michael “Mouse” Daniel and a family friend Steven “Gaz“ Gaston, both rappers themselves. Steven helped him develop his writing and rhyming skills while Michael came up with the perfect name that would suit a kid with such a mischievous nature. He would say, “this kid is vicious, therefore he needs a vicious name“. Hence, “BADSEED“ was born. Not the least bit shy, he would perform for family, friends and anyone who wanted to listen. In 1998, he and childhood friend, fellow rapper and Compton native Ardis Burns formed the group “The Lost Soulz”, with BADSEED being the group’s premiere artist. Several years later, he met another Compton rapper by the name of YOUNG YAYO. Raised in a city known for it’s violence, gangs and impoverished neighborhoods, the duo’s music reflected their harsh environment. With their edgy style of hardcore and raunchy lyrics, their music was infectious to their Compton based fans. The buzz had begun. Soon BADSEED and the Lost Soulz were a household name throughout Los Angeles. BADSEED would spend the next six years writing, rapping and performing for fans and admirers. The family’s household radio would be his recording mechanism. At the age of 20, he took his skills to another level when he begin recording his songs at local studios. He also begin to collaborate with his god brother JUNIOR who sang the hook from the super successful hit song “Sexy Lady” with Yung Berg. BADSEED and JUNIOR have recorded a number of songs together which they often perform live. They plan to release their recordings some day in the near future. In 2006, he and YOUNG YAYO were signed to Brazil Street Records, owned and operated by Big Fase 100, the brother of mega rap star “the Game”. Under the Brazil Street label, they begin performing live at some the hottest venues throughout the LA area with sell out crowds in attendance. The sensational duo had such an appeal that the huge crowds they drew in would go wild when the Lost Soulz took to the stage. With this type of fan reaction, it validated for BADSEED that this was truly his calling. In 2008, the dynamic duo left Brazil Street Records for independent creative purposes and individual artistic growth. However, they continue to maintain a close personal relationship with Big Fase 100 and fully support the label. BADSEED continues to perform his unique style of rap music for his many fans every opportunity he gets. He has earned the respect of established rap artists in the industry such as G Malone of Cash Money and the fast flowing lyricist Sugar Free. With a repertoire of over 500 songs to his credit, all self written and recorded, BADSEED anxiously awaits the day a wise label will take notice and sign “Compton’s finest”, “BADSEED” to a well deserved recording contract.
