Bassekou Kouyate & N'goni Ba (Mali) - at VOA in Washington, DC - Video
PUBLISHED:  Oct 23, 2013
DESCRIPTION:
Bassekou Kouyate & N'goni Ba hail from Bamako, Mali. Amy Sacko is the lead singer and wife of Bassekou. They stop in the studio for a live performance and interview during their US tour of their latest album Jamako. All of the musicians come from griot (Fr) families (known as jeliw in Bambara). Griots are similar to English bards but different in that griots are a hereditary cast of musicians and wordsmiths and they learn their craft from father to son, mother to daughter, and in more recent times, father to daughter. Their previous album I Speak Fula was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Traditional World Music Album in 2010. This interview is in English and French.
